Key learning strategies and checks for learning that scaffold assessment

Key learning experiences and teaching strategies

Checks for learning (what will be

checked, how, using what strategies
& tools)?

1. What do you know about

1. 1. Understanding of what an advertisement is:

- Explain end of term assessment and criteria
- KWL on what children know about advertisements
- Watch video explanation of what an advertisement is

2. 2. Looking at textual features of an advertisement:

- Discussion on persuasive techniques children are aware of
previously
- PowerPoint on the most common language text
- Graphic organizer on how each technique persuades an
audience

3. 3. Looking in depth at the textual persuasive techniques:

- Looking at individual ads that hold one technique each
- Children will use a worksheet to match each AD via a number to
what persuasive text feature it links to

4. 4. Looking at the visual aspects of an advertisement:

- Brainstorm on IWB of what visual aspects students think affect
advertisements the most
- Deconstruction of a still-image advertisement of the visual
aspect- colour, background, size, image etc.

5. 5. Looking at slogans and logos within the advertisement:

- Discussion of the definition of a logo/slogan and example
- Deconstruction of an advertisement complete with a logo an
slogan on the IWB as a class, and discussion on its effectiveness

6. 6. Deconstructing of an advertisement as a class together:

- Quick recount of previous lessons on textual and visual features
- Students and learning manager will work together to deconstruct
the image on the IWB
- Create a KWL at the end of the lesson on what we learnt today
about deconstructing an advertisement

7. 7. Construct an advertisement together as a class:

- Work together as a class to create an advertisement on the IWB
- Think, pair, share and group work to create a whole class idea
8. Children planning for assessment:
- Children will use the graphic organizer for Invention to plan their
chosen advertisement piece
- If students finish their planning lesson early (advertisement plan
must be approved by LM), they will move on and create their
advertisement in this lesson
9. Creating the advertisement
- Children will use their graphic organizer planning from the previous
lesson to create their advertisement in this lesson
- Depending on child they will either make these on paper or
computer.
- If children finish creating the advertisement early in the lesson,
they will use this time to prepare for the oral presentation they must
give the next lesson explaining their choices
10. Presenting the advertisements to the class
- Children will make a 2-5 minute presentation on their
advertisement explaining their planning choices.
- After presentations the children will give peer assessment to one
another with 1 warm and 1 cool comment to improve the childrens
next assessment piece.

advertisements?
Where do you see advertisements in
real life?
The LM would be looking for quality
answers and involvement in the
students, and what ads they talk about
the most to plan further lessons to their
interests

2. What type of language have you seen

used in an advertisement?
Do you know what _ is, and where it is
used?
The class made graphic organizer will
provide feedback to LM on what the
children know

3. The worksheet will provide the learning

manager with an insight into if the
children can identify textual features of
an advertisement

4. What is the most important visual

aspect of an advertisement and why?
What is the biggest thing that catches
your eye about an advertisement?
Do you think an advertisement would
be less effective if it did not have
visuals?

5. What do we see here on the logo?

Why would it have this?
What is the purpose of a logo and
slogan?
What are some of the most memorable
slogans or logos you remember and
why?

6. By using the IWB the learning manager

can write right next to the features of the
advertisement they deconstruct.
The learning manager will be observing
the childrens knowledge of all the prior
knowledge they have learnt, by being
able to deconstruct an advertisement it
will make it easier to construct one.
The KWL will allow the learning
manager to learn what the children still
need to know to complete their
assessment piece.

7. Creating an advertisement will allow the

learning manager to observe who
grasps the concepts for their next lesson
to plan

8. Learning manager will need to approve

the childrens planning task.
If the children have not planned
correctly the learning manager will guide
their understanding to come to an
appropriate plan.

9. Observation of childrens creation and

ease of task.

10. Observation of childrens understanding

of advertisements, and explanations of
their choices.
Observation of childrens peer reviews
