Century Football 2015 Study Guide - Physical Education

History: American Football evolved from Rugby, which was a spin-off from Soccer.
Early roots of the modern game can be traced to a college game played in 1869 between
Princeton and Rutgers Universities.

Object of the Game: The team with the ball (OFFENSE) is given a SERIES of 4
DOWNS (tries) to get a FIRST DOWN (Ball over the midfield line) or a TOUCH DOWN
(Ball over the goal line into the end zone). DEFENSE is the opposing team trying to stop
the ball from advancing forward. The team with the most points wins.

PE Scoring: Touch down = 6pts, Extra Point 2pts,

Defense can score a Safety (offense tackled in own end
zone) 2pts

KICK OFF
A skill used to start the game. One team lines up
behind their own goal line and punts the ball to the receiving team.
After a team score, scoring team will use a kick off towards their
opponents.
LINE OF SCRIMMAGE Marked by the football on the ground, it is
the invisible line that bisects the football from side line to side line
diving the offensive and defensive teams.
END OF A DOWN Also known as a dead ball.
A One Hand Touch above the waist of the ball carrier is the method
of tackling used in PE NO BODY TACKLING!!!
Fumbled ball the ball is down when & where it is dropped. This
includes a fumbled hike (snap).
Out of Bounds the ball is down when the carrier, or the ball is on or
over the sideline or end line.
Down if the ball carriers Hand or Knee hits the ground.
Incomplete Pass - The receiver misses or drops the pass. Down is
over and the ball is returned to the Line of Scrimmage.
Interception The pass is caught by a defensive player and then he
is tagged for the down.
CADENCE
The Quarterback calls READY? Down - Set Hike! for the snap
(Hike) of the football.

FORWARD PASS Must be thrown from behind the Line of Scrimmage.

Receiver then
runs with the ball after completing the catch.
RUSH-Defensive play A 5000 (5 full seconds) count that is called
out by a defensive
player before they can rush the passer.
BLITZ ! A defensive charging in play called loudly BLITZ!!!!! to run in
the rush without
counting 5000ths. This play may only be used ONE time per series of 4
downs.
PASS INTERFERENCE
A foul if Defense interferes with the Receiver
by making
contact with the receiver going up for the pass, then the Pass is Ruled
Completed for the offense.
BOOTLEG
Also, known as the QB Sneak. A running play by the
Quarterback to move the ball
forward. May only be used ONCE in a series of 4 downs.
