7th Grade Unit 1: Ratio and Proportional Relationship

Prerequisite Skills:
Ratio concepts
Unit rates associated with non-complex fractions
Equivalent ratio tables

Welcome our first math unit!!!

UNIT OVERVIEW: In this unit students will learn how to analyzing, recognizing and computing proportional
relationships to solve real-world and mathematical problems. In Unit 1, students build on their Grade 6
experiences with ratios, unit rates, and fraction division to analyze proportional relationships. They decide
whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, identify constants of proportionality, and represent
the relationship by equations. In 7th grade students will find unit rates in ratios involving fractional
quantities. Students will set up an equation with equivalent fractions and use reasoning about equivalent
fractions to solve them. Also, in this section students will determine if two quantities are proportional by
using tables, equations, and graphs. The shortcut of cross products should be examined later as students
begin to recognize patterns and why the shortcut works. Students should not be using cross products first
, they need to identify the unit rate given a table, graph, equation, diagrams, and a verbal description.
Knowing the constant of proportionality (unit rate) students will be able to write equations in the form y=kx

Learning Target 1: I can find unit rate with complex fractions.

7.RP.1

Example
A) equivalent ratio

Ratios that make the same comparisons

Examples:

B) rate

A ratio that compares quantities of different units, such as

miles per hour, price per pound, students per class

Example:

7th Grade Unit 1: Ratio and Proportional Relationship

C) unit rate

A rate in which the second term is 1

Example:

D) unit cost/ unit price

A unit rate used to compare prices

Examples:

E) proportion

An equation which states that two ratios are equivalent

Example:

F) complex fraction

A complex fraction is a fraction that has a fraction in the numerator,

denominator, or both.

7th Grade Unit 1: Ratio and Proportional Relationship

G) ratio

Learning Target 2: I can identify proportional relationships and the contact of

proportionality
7.RP.2b, 7RP.2c
Example
A) proportional relationship

Two variables are proportional if they maintain a constant ratio

B) constant proportionality

Constant of proportionality : The number representing the ratio of

any two corresponding sides in two similar geometric figures.

Learning Target 3: I can graph proportional relationship

7.RP.2d
Example

A) table

B) graph

C) equation

A mathematical sentence that uses an equals sign to show

that two quantities are equal

Learning Target 4: I can interpret graph of a proportional relationship

Example
A) table

7.RP.2b,d

7th Grade Unit 1: Ratio and Proportional Relationship

B) graph

Mastery Quizzes: 50 pts. each

Mastery quizzes are short quizzes that assess 2 3 learning targets. Your child will be given this quiz once the
learning targets have been taught in class. The best way to prepare for these quizzes is by completing classwork
and homework. If your child is struggling with homework assignments please contact us, or have your child attend
an extra help session.
Mastery Quiz 1: will assess the following learning targets:
o I can compute unit rates with ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in
like or different units
o I can compute unit rates with ratios of fractions (complex fractions)
Mastery Quiz 2: will assess the following learning targets:
o I can decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship using table of values.
o I can decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship using graph.
o I can use equations to represent proportional relationships.
Mastery Quiz 3: I will assess the following learning targets:
o I can identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in verbal description of proportional
relationships.
o I can identify constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs and equations.
Mastery Quiz 4: I will assess the following learning targets:
o I can use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio problems.
o I can interpret graph of a proportional relationship
Unit Test: 100 pts. Approximate date:_________________________
Your student to review his or her notes to study for this exam
Performance Task: 100 pts.: Approximate date:_________________________
This is an in class assessment. It is a multi-step word problem, similar to the kind of questions students will see on
Day 3 of the NYS test.
Culminating Project: 100 pts.
The culminating project will be assigned in the middle of the unit. It will not be due until the end of the unit. It will
assess all learning targets. You will be able to access this on weebly.
Learning Activities
Your child will be completing a variety of learning activities in class that reflect the learning targets for Unit 1. These
will be graded, and you will be able to track your childs progress online.
Thank you for your continued support,
