Course Description
Prerequisite: FMD 301 with grade of C or better; and General Education mathematics requirement. Basic
retail and buying formulas are examined for the purpose of understanding six month merchandising plans
and open-to-buy calculations. Case studies include vender relations and negotiation strategies. 3(3-0) F
Course Overview
This course is to familiarize students with principles and terminology important to understanding
profitable merchandising. This knowledge is important in preparing students for entry-level positions in
retailing and eventual careers as buyers, merchandising managers, upper-level executives and
entrepreneurs. The course is divided into the following two primary subject areas: merchandising
mathematics calculation and case study analysis.

Course Objective
After successful completion of this course a student should be able to do the following:
a)
examine current fashion industry principles and practices by applying the case study
method of analysis.
b)
develop critical thinking and communication skills by constructing and defending alternative
solutions to actual business challenges through case development, and computer applications.
c)
explore moral and ethical issues that face businesses today.
d)
strengthen communication skills through class presentations and written assignments.
e)
understand merchandising calculations used in merchandise, to include assortment planning, sixmonth budgeting, and open-to-buy preparation in merchandising.
f)
learn to work effectively as part of a team through group projects.
Attendance Policy
The following absentee policy applies to FMD 304, FMD 305, FMD 306, FMD 362, FMD 460, FMD 560
classes. Because the classes listed above are upper-level or senior level classes you will be held to a
higher standard concerning your absences in these classes.

You are encouraged to attend all scheduled class times. If you need to make a doctors appointment
because of an illness, or a yearly checkup, you will need to do so at a time you are not scheduled to be in
class.
There will be no points given for attendance, but 10 points will be deducted for every class missed over
two absences. I do realize that extenuating circumstances do arise and missing class is unavoidable and
these circumstances will be evaluated on a needed basis.
Extra Credit points will be given throughout the semester which can be used towards missed points from
an absence or raise your over all grade. YOU MUST be in class the day extra credit points are given or
you will not receive the points.
This policy is not to penalize students, but to reiterate the importance of attending class and participating
in class discussions and group projects, as well as to prepare you for the workforce you will soon be
joining.

It is the responsibility of the student to check Blackboard weekly. If there is an
assignment that has not been posted or class participation points are missing, you have
one week after the posting to bring the error to my attention. After that time the grade
posted will not be reevaluated. Especially class particaption, as time passes it is hard to
remember if a student was in attendance or not.
If you are going to be absent, be prepared to turn in your assignments by email or Blackboard before or
during the scheduled class time.

Course Schedule
Attached is the semester schedule. The schedule is subject to change at instructors discretion. You will
be tested after each chapter in the book. The final is not a comprehensive exam, and will cover the last
chapter in the book.

Dropping Class
It is your responsibility to understand the Universitys procedure for dropping a class. If you stop attending this class
but do not follow proper procedure for dropping the class, you will receive a failing grade and will also be financially
obligated to pay for the class. For information about dropping a class or withdrawing from the university, contact the

Policy on Use of Cell Phones in Classes


As a member of the learning community, each student has a responsibility to other students who are members of the
community. When cell phones or pagers ring and students respond in class or leave class to respond, it disrupts the
class. Therefore, the Office of the Provost prohibits the use by students of cell phones, pagers, PDAs, or similar
communication devices during scheduled classes. All such devices must be turned off or put in a silent (vibrate)
mode and ordinarily should not be taken out during class. Given the fact that these same communication devices are
an integral part of the Universitys emergency notification system, an exception to this policy would occur when
numerous devices activate simultaneously. When this occurs, students may consult their devices to determine if a
university emergency exists. If that is not the case, the devices should be immediately returned to silent mode and
put away. Other exceptions to this policy may be granted at the discretion of the instructor.
