Class Policies
Attendance
In-class assignments and quizzes cannot be made up unless the instructor deems an absence on a class
day as excused due to exceptional circumstances. Examples of exceptional circumstances may include
pre-arranged participation in University-sanctioned activities and programs, personal and family
(documented) illnesses, and/or other compelling circumstances.
Regular attendance is mandatory and essential for mastering course content. When a student is absent
from class, it is his or her responsibility to obtain from classmates any class notes, handouts, or any
other items that were missed.
Please keep in mind that I work until 5:00 pm across campus, and may be a few minutes late getting
over to PCOB. If I am going to be more than 10 minutes late or so, I will do my best to send the class an
email.

Group Work
I will assign you to groups of 3-4 during the second week of the semester. You will work with the same
group throughout the semester and will submit many assignments as a group. Please bring any
questions or concerns about group work to me as soon as possible.

Blackboard
All class work will be submitted through Blackboard. To access Blackboard, log in to
http://my.missouristate.edu or http://blackboard.missouristate.edu. I strongly recommend that you use
Firefox to access Blackboard. Firefox is free and available for download at http://www.mozilla.org/enUS/firefox/new/.
If you have questions about Blackboard or any problems, please contact me as quickly as possible.

Email
I will be sending emails to your live.missouristate.edu accounts, and many of those emails will begin
with the course name to help you identify that these are notifications from this class. It is your
responsibility to check your email accounts for these messages.
By default, Blackboard sends a LOT of emails. You can change your email notification settings, if desired,
by following the directions here. Please keep Announcement notifications ON.

Assignment Submission
For each individual assignment, you will submit your own work. For each group assignment, one group
member will submit work for the entire group. By default, each group member will receive the same
grade; however, I reserve the right to assign individual grades to group work at my discretion. If you are
not in class or leave early for in-class group assignments, you will receive a zero.
Close your files before you submit them. Its easy to accidentally select the temporary file created by
Office (look for a ~ character at the beginning of the file name), but I cannot open or grade this file.

Late Assignments
In general, late assignments are not accepted. It is an integral part of any assignment that it is submitted
in a timely manner. In the workplace, employees can lose their jobs as the result of late assignments.
That late assignment can impact the profitability of the company to the extent that many more
employees can lose their positions. It can easily create a domino effect.
Your assignment guidelines are provided to you at the start of the semester; there are very few reasons
for these to be late. In this academic course, late work only accepted for exceptional situations (as
specified in the attendance policy above). Assignments are due as specified for each assignment. Be
sure to allow time for possible computer or printing issues.

File Backups
You will be creating files using the computers in PCOB 320. It is your responsibility to maintain copies of
all files in a location other than these computers I recommend using SkyDrive or a USB key.
When we get to Photoshop, even though you will turn in JPG and other flat files, keep copies of PSD
files with layers for future editing, as we will reuse these files throughout the last part of the semester. If
you do not keep the layers, you will have a very hard time editing these files and this could cost you
points.

Citing Sources
It is critical that you get in the habit of identifying where material (text, photos, fonts, etc) that you use
for your assignments comes from. You will be asked to cite your sources and you will be required to
provide a full URL for web-based material. For example, http://fashionista.com and
http://fashionista.com/2011/12/a-look-back-at-the-top-5-hair-trends-of-2011 are NOT the same URL.
Pinterest, Polyvore, etc
You are welcome and encouraged to use sites like Pinterest and Polyvore to find material for your
classwork in this class. Keep in mind that Pinterest and Polyvore URLs are NOT SUFFICIENT when you are
citing URLs; you must follow the links back to the original source of the material.
In the case of http://pinterest.com/pin/81768549454124153, to correctly cite the source of the GUCCI
Vintage dress, you would find the Polyvore set at http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=41441789 and
then use http://www.farfetch.com/shopping/women/gucci-vintage-dress-item-10136833.aspx .
If a pin was uploaded by the user, note that fact along with the Pinterest URL.
I will deduct a minimum of 5 points per assignment if any URLs or other source information are cited
incorrectly.

Spelling and Grammar

This course will include written assignments. A minimum of 5 points per assignment will be deducted at
my discretion for poor spelling, grammar, and inability to express clear thoughts. Use spell checkers and
feel free to run your assignments by either me or the Writing Center.

File Names
You will submit files of various types for each assignment, group or individual; guidelines will be
provided in the assignment instructions. Files must be named as follows:
For individual assignments: [Your Last Name] [Your First Name]- [Assignment Name].[File Type]
example: Oetting Kristi Class Introductions.docx
For group assignments: [Group Name] [Assignment Name].[File Type]
example: Silken Sleepwear Designs Launch a Fashion Label.docx
I will deduct 5 points per assignment for incorrect file names.

instructor and can also be brought to the attention of your instructors Department Head. Please visit
the OED website at www.missouristate.edu/equity .

Emergency Response Syllabi Statement

Students who require assistance during an emergency evacuation must discuss their needs with their
professors and the Disability Resource Center. If you have emergency medical information to share with
me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an
appointment with me as soon as possible.
For additional information students should contact the Disability Resource Center, 836-4192 (PSU 405),
or Donald Clark, Director of Public Safety and Transportation at 836-8870.

Academic Integrity
Missouri State University is a community of scholars committed to developing educated persons who
accept the responsibility to practice personal and academic integrity. You are responsible for knowing
and following the universitys student honor code, Student Academic Integrity Policies and Procedures,
available at www.missouristate.edu/policy/academicintegritystudents.htm and also available at the
Reserves Desk in Meyer Library. Any student participating in any form of academic dishonesty will be
subject to sanctions as described in this policy.

Policy on Use of Cell Phones in Classes

As a member of the learning community, each student has a responsibility to other students who are
members of the community. When cell phones or pagers ring and students respond in class or leave
class to respond, it disrupts the class. Therefore, the Office of the Provost prohibits the use by students
of cell phones, pagers, PDAs, or similar communication devices during scheduled classes. All such
devices must be turned off or put in a silent (vibrate) mode and ordinarily should not be taken out
during class. Given the fact that these same communication devices are an integral part of the
Universitys emergency notification system, an exception to this policy would occur when numerous
devices activate simultaneously. When this occurs, students may consult their devices to determine if a
university emergency exists. If that is not the case, the devices should be immediately returned to silent
mode and put away. Other exceptions to this policy may be granted at the discretion of the instructor.

Department of Fashion and Interior Design Policy on Acceptable Computing

Usage
The MSU Disciplinary Code prohibits students from unauthorized access or use of University computers,
computer systems or networks. This department feels that any student who uses any ID or password
other than that which has been officially assigned to him or her, or who accesses any unauthorized files,
is in violation of the Disciplinary Code. Any student found guilty of this violation may have all access
rights to University computers removed immediately and for the following semester. A repeated offense
may cause permanent revocation of all access rights. The University may take additional disciplinary
action.
