Lets have fun with Photoshop

We will be creating a pencil sketch of ourselves using a photo.

1. Open your documents or picture folder and find an image of yourself that you would like to use.
2. Leave the folder open and then go to Adobe Photoshop. Open this as well.
3. In Photoshop click on File and then Open. A folder will open (probably in your Documents
folder). Search the folder until you find the image you want to use.
4. Click on the image so that it opens in Photoshop. Then go to the top of Photoshop, Click on
IMAGE then click on Duplicate.

This window will pop up:

Rename your image where it is highlighted in blue. This is mine:

You now have 2 images of the same photo with different names:

X out of the original image. We will be working with the copy.

5. This is what my screen looks like:

6. On the right side of your screen you will see a small image of the larger photo on the screen.
Double click the small image (it should say Background). Another window will popup once you
have double clicked. The window will say New Layer. Click OK.

7. 7. You then want to right click on that new layer (which is now call Layer 0). Click on Duplicate
Layer

8. Click OK when the new window pops up.

9. Your screen should look like this:

Make sure that Layer 0 copy is highlighted in blue.

10. Looking at the image above (#9.) you will see 3 tabs. The Layers tab should be first. You will
notice a box below the word Layers that says Normal. Click on it and a menu will pop up. We
want to change the color mode to Color Dodge. Click on it.

11. My image now looks like this:

12. Press and hold ctrl I to invert the image. You photo will look like this:

13. Go to the top of your Photoshop screen and look for the word Filter. A menu pops up. Go to
Blur and another menu will pop up. Click on Gaussian Blur.

14. Your image should look something like this:

15. On the Gaussian Blur window play with the Radius slider. Move the slider so that your image
looks similar to mine below. Ive change my Radius to be set on 19.0 pixels. Click OK.

16. Now look at your Layers window on the bottom right. You will see an image on the bottom that
looks like this.

17. We are creating a new fill or adjustment layer. Click on the black & white circle. You will see that
another menu has popped up. Scroll down on the menu and click on Hue & Saturation.

18. The Hue/Saturation box looks like this:

Slide the arrow on the Saturation so that it is all the way on the left.

19. Notice how all the color has been removed from your image.
20. Click File, Save As, and give the image a name. It will save it as a pdf file.
21. Now go back and click, File, Save As, scroll the Format menu and click on jpeg.

You have just saved your black & white image.

22. Go to File, Open, and click on the jpeg file that you just created. Mine is Tango copy.jpeg
23. Once the jpeg is open, click on Image, Adjustments, and then Levels

This is what you should see:

Click on the slider arrow at the far left and move it to the right. Look at how your image changes
while you are doing this. When you find that your image looks the way you want it to look, click
OK.

24. My image looks good but I want to remove my background. There is a tool bar on the left side of
the Photoshop screen. Click on the paintbrush tool. Make sure its the one on the top.

25. Go back to the top of the Photoshop window and look for the image of the paint brush and then
the image with the word Brush next to it.

Clicking on this window will determine what the size of your paintbrush will be. I switched my
paintbrush size several times but I started around 400. Thats a large size but its okay.

26. Still working at the top of the Photoshop window make sure that your settings for Mode,
Opacity and Flow are the same as mine:

27. Go to the side bar and find this image:

The red square is the foreground color, the black square is the background color. Yours might
look different. You want to click on the foreground color and change it to white. When you click
on the red square this window will pop up. Notice the little white circle on the image below.
Move your mouse to the white circle and move it to the far left, where the color is white.

Moving the circle you should see this:

Click OK.

28. Move your cursor over your image. It should look like a big circle.

Make sure that your circle is on the background before you click your mouse or else you will lose
part of your image.
You can click on the background and it will seem to disappear. You can also hold the mouse
down and remove larger parts of the background. Make sure that you do not click on the part
you want to keep. This is when I went in and changed the size of my brush to make it smaller.

Once you have removed the background, its time to save again. You should click File, Save As,
and give it a new name.

29. Now that you are familiar with Photoshop. Click on the following link for a different way to
create a pencil sketch.
30. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K43-_zhQZiM
Look on the next page. Its the same image but I followed the YouTube video.
Which one do you like better?

Was it easier or harder for you to read the directions to make a pencil image?
