Organization
al Leadership

Yukl, Gary (2013). Leadership in

Organizations, 8th Ed.

The key learning concepts in

this course were to recognize
the nature of leadership
everywhere. There was an
emphasis on understanding
the various roles in an
organization and how
leadership affects each one. I
enjoyed the free subscription
to the New York Times
Leadership section where we
got to listen to lectures and
interact with our classmates
virtually. Another activity that
we discussed on a weekly

This class set me up to work in

an organization where I will be
able to look into the
individuals that are working
for me and help them to grow
into their role. I want to be the
rock in my position wherever I
end up working so that I may
inspire everyone to be the
best version of him or her as
possible. I found that the
Managers Workshop was one
of the key activities in the
class that helped me to apply
these skills to the workplace. I
was happy after this class
ended to know that leadership
was going to be learning

In my professional portfolio I
would most like to input the
fact that my ability to assess
the positive and negative
aspects of the ones that I work
with. I now have a great
understanding of how to work
well with others and work with
them to become a leader in
their own roles. It does not
matter if a person is at the
bottom rank of the company,
everyone can be a leader and
I hope to make that happen.
The more leaders that
surround you the more
effective a leader that you can
be.

OGL 240:
Introduction
to Project
Management

basis was The Managers

Workshop where I was able to
look at different employees
personnel files and worked to
assess their strengths and
weaknesses.
In this course I had the
pleasure of learning from
Professor Thomas about the
behavioral dynamics in the
workplace and in other
organizations. The main
objectives were to understand
the thought processes and
how people act in a day to day
setting in any type of
organization. Learning the
necessary aspects of
interacting with others was
taught through quizzes,
interactive discussion boards
and various writing
assignments where I was able
to convey how well I learned
the material.

The main objectives in this

class were to learn the main
points and verbiage of project
management. There was a
good amount of writing in this
class so that my professor,
Professor Bates, could
understand how well we

about this topic for the next

year and a half.

I have been able to directly

apply these behavioral
dynamics to my work life as
well as my life at home. I did
not really understand how the
influences in the workplace
shape the way that people act
and perform. Effective
listening has helped me to sit
back and acquire the most
amount of knowledge possible
before speaking again. Before
this class I noticed that I was
occupied trying to think of a
response to someone else and
not actually understanding
what was being said. The
lessons in this course have
inspired me to work on
making myself better at this
so that I am able to be a
better person.
This project management
introduction course was one
that I really enjoyed. My
girlfriend works for a
construction company right
now and I have heard her talk
about some of the aspects of
project management. Before I

The lessons that from this

course that I would add to my
portfolio would be growing the
ways that I effectively
communicate with others,
learning how to interact and
be conscious of cultural
influences that are always
present, and also having a
better understanding of how
to build and keep
relationships. These lessons
will help me in all aspects of
business but most importantly
it will help with my personal
life, which is more important
than the work life.

I am able to add my ability to

effectively learn and interact
with others into my portfolio.
There was so much
engagement with the other
students that I got to know
them well. Having the ability
to work with others is a truly

understood the lessons. The

YouTube videos were
especially helpful in this
course as I was sort of
interacting with the course
itself and I was able to rewind
them to take notes. Professor
was very active in the class
and helped to shape the way
my papers were written and
that was why I became so
engaged in the course.

OGL 260:
Resource

s/
Foundations
of Finance

In this course I learned about

the different facts about
finance and applying what I
was learning to actual
businesses. The video at the
beginning of each lesson was
incredibly helpful to
understand where I stood and
what I needed to learn before
that week was over. I enjoyed
the amount of papers that we
were to write because I could
really let my professor know
how much of the information I
was retaining.

took this class I did not really

understand what she was
talking about but now I am
able to converse with her
easily about it. Since I have
taken this introduction course
I have grown to enjoy the
work that comes with it. I have
already begun to apply for
construction jobs in the
project management field so I
know that I will be able to take
the lessons that I learned from
this course and directly apply
them when I start. Getting to
design a full party for a young
child with a group of about
eight other people allowed me
to get hands on and learn how
to work well with others to get
the job done.
In this resource allocation
class I found that after taking
a few finance classes in the
past that I was really able to
apply my knowledge to many
real life situations. This hands
on approach was what I
needed as I am a very visual
learner. It was tough to get
into the swing of things
because I am not so much a
numbers person but once I did
I became successful in the
class. I have already applied
the risk management

defining moment in the project

management field because if
you cannot connect with other
people then simply put, you
will not get the work. A lesson
that can also go into my
portfolio would be how to
motivate the other individuals
that are around you. In the
group projects I had the great
fortune to have highly
motivated people but focusing
that motivation on all of the
necessary aspects that were
crucial to getting the job done
was a little more difficult.

The aspects of this class that I

would like to include in my
portfolio would be my ability
to take calculated risks and to
understand the weight of my
decisions. This concept was
probably the single biggest
thing that I learned in this
class and I have been able to
directly apply it to my life at
work.

OGL 300:
Theory and
Practice of
Leadership
OR PAF 410:
Building
Leadership
Skills

In OGL 300, I very much

enjoyed the amount of work
that was necessary to
complete it. I was very
engaged in it because it was
highly focused growing you to
be a better leader. The WEAA
case studies were one of the
main teaching tools in this
course and it really helped to
dissect other situations in the
workplace to see what I might
have done differently to be
more effective.

OGL 321:
Project
Leadership,
Strategy and
Scope

This course had something

that I enjoyed more than any
other course that I have taken
so far and that was the
Harvard Business Simulation.
This activity was designed to
help you find the most
efficient ways to lead a team
to finish a project on time,
under budget and also
keeping your employees
happy.

concepts to my everyday
activities as a warehouse
manager when I focus on
making orders for inventory.
In the case studies throughout
the class we took one case
study and worked to figure out
the different areas where
there could be improvements
through management and
leadership in the organization.
I have three employees myself
and I actually decided to build
a survey for them so that we
can all figure out the
inconsistencies in in my
management style or how to
make the processes more
efficient.
In these simulations there was
a budget that you had to
decide how many employees
you would need, how skilled
they would be in there
respective fields and also how
advanced your product was
going to be. The idea was that
you had to continuously tweak
everything based on
productivity and if things were
going as planned so that the
final product was quality. I
have taken these lessons and
directly applied them at work.
I am constantly given long
term projects that I have to

The lessons that I would add

to my portfolio would be my
ability to effectively lead the
others that are around me. I
have excelled in my position
of a manager (at least I
believe I have) and the
theories that went into this
WEAA case study were
definitely helpful.

The main lessons that I would

add to my portfolio would be
my ability to stay focused
when a project is pulling me in
so many directions at once.
During the simulations there
was always something going
wrong and I needed to be
there to manage the team and
fix these problems.
Understanding how to remain
calm and trust that my
decisions will get my team
and I to be successful was
something that I didnt realize
I would have learned in this
class.

BIS 345:
Organization
al Ethics

This was one of my tougher

classes that I have taken at
ASU because I was just getting
used to the accelerated
sessions but it had some of
the best lessons that I could
have learned. The class was
focused on the book more
than anything to learn all of
the concepts. Also the
discussion boards were very
helpful in getting feedback
from the other students.

BIS 343:

figure out how to complete

them all successfully. The little
things like scheduling
meetings with the team to
stay up to date have really
been help at work.
Ethics in the business world is
a top priority in my mind
because if there are
mischievous people that do
not follow the rules then there
is a great chance for bad
things to happen. If I were to
own my own business that
would be one of the top
qualities that I look for in a
person. When you have good
people working around you
then there is a healthy
environment in which to be
successful.
I have enjoyed interacting
with the other students in the
group discussion because
everyone is broken into
smaller groups to talk about
how our life connects with the
text book. We really get to
know one another and it is
excellent to have others that
care to constructively critique
my work.

I believe that thinking before

you act was a theme that
would fit into my portfolio
well. I now know the facts
from this course and it would
now be a conscious effort to
do something that would
violate the integrity of my
business or any that were
associated with it.

This is a common lesson that I

learned this week in the
readings but it applies to my
life very much. It is making
effective decisions in a team.
Sometimes you are not always
the leader but the decisions
that are made within a group
effect many people so it is
essential to go through all of
the steps of the decision
before making the final call.

OGL 355:

I enjoyed this course with

Professor Erwin very much. He
was active and was always
helping me with my written
work. Over this course I was
able to really refine my ideas
on leadership through the
written paper assignments. I
did not have a great
understanding of what the
course was all about but at
the end of working with
Professor Erwin I felt like I was
ready to take what I had
learned with me to work every
day.

BIS 357:

This course focused on tests

and discussion boards to
assess how well the lessons
were being learned. It was
great to work on these tests
because they were open note

through the chapters and then
be able to look back on my
notes to find the answers. The
discussion boards were helpful
as well because we were
asked to reply to many other

This course inspired me to

challenge the processes in my
company over the summer. I
lead by example as an intern
over the summer by asking
many questions about the
things that had been in place
for years. I found that in some
ways, using electronic
documents would not waste,
as much time being passed
back and forth and also is
better for the environment. In
my small team I set up a
dropbox account where
everyone could log in and find
all of the contracts that they
needed and other files
instantly. I lead the charge on
innovating in this team to
make them more efficient.
Being able to use this
assessment knowledge has
helped me at work the most
as I am able to recognize the
outside factors like
stakeholders and how the
decisions I make will
potentially affect them. Before
this course I really just made
decisions based on how I felt
at that particular moment
which is not a good way to
work. Now I am conscious of

The best lesson that I would

add to my portfolio would be
my ability to inspire change
where I see fit. I have become
much better at finding the
small things that dont seem
like big deals and refining the
processes to save time,
money and effort. I was glad
to have taken this course and
learned the skills to innovate
because it got me recognized
by a my team and they knew
that I was taking the job
seriously.

I would add being conscious of

my decisions and enabling
others would be the two
lessons that I would add to my
portfolio. Understanding what
is going on in the workplace
and being as knowledgeable
as possible is timeless and I
believe that it is one of the
most important lessons that I
have learned.

currently in this session so I do
not have all of the lessons
down yet but currently I am
working on dissecting the
leadership abilities of Captain
Cook in the late 1700s. We
are also taking advantage of
an LPI test where I give other
people a test and they are
supposed to assess the
leadership qualities that I
have.

COM 430:

on

I am also taking this course

right now and I am enjoying
the discussion boards. The
prompts are very open and
can really be answered in any
way that you want. Being able
to just open up on a general
topic is great because then
you really get to see what the
other classmates are thinking
about compared to a simple
discussion question.

I have looked at the leadership

abilities of Captain Cook and
Columbus and how they differ.
I can say that Captain Cook
was a very effective leader
and he had the qualities that I
look for in a leader. He was
composed in the face of
adversity and was a great
motivator for his crew when
times were looking tough. So
far I have applied that
knowledge to my personal life
where I am trying to stay
more positive for the people
around me. This helps
everyone stay up on their
positivity and creates a much
better culture.
I have learned that effective
leaders are usually never
satisfied with where they are
in the business world because
they are always hungry. By
that I mean that they are
always looking to get to the
next level. I have taken this
idea with me everywhere I go
now because I want to make
my business the best that it
can possibly be and then
when I get there I will go even

A lesson that I would take

away from this class so far
would be to model the way. I
connected with this concept
because it is all about leading
by example. I think that
people are much more apt to
work hard and be loyal when
there is a highly motivated
and inspirational leader in
front of them.

The lesson that I would take

with me would be to always
strive for the next goal.
Always looking for the next
thing that could be better is
what separates me from the
other employees and can
potentially earn me a great job
or raise.

assignments such as this. I
have been able to assess how
much I have learned in each
of the key courses so far and it
has bee a great experience to
look at this post analysis.

OGL 498: ProSeminar II

It is tough to say exactly what

I have applied to my everyday
life as we have only been in
the class for a few weeks but
one thing is Frames SelfAssessment Test. I found this
to be very helpful in
evaluating my strengths so I
know what I need to work on.

I think that something I would

like to add to my portfolio
would be focusing on group
dynamics to see how the team
could possibly run smoother
and more efficiently. It is
already hard enough to keep a
team working well together
but to take it a step further
and make them all stars is
another story.

Table 2: Plus / Delta Significant Learning Experiences Structure and Transfer

Pick one of your most significant learning experiences from Table 1. Take some time to deeply reflect on the
experience. Respond to the following questions / sub-questions as explicitly as possible. Use your imagination and
creativity here this is really all about making connections, and seeing what you can learn about your learning style
(and yourself) from the experience!
Describe the task / assignment? What,
specifically, did you learn?
Be sure to address both declarative forms of
knowledge (things you learned concepts,
theories, ideas, models) as well as procedural
forms of knowledge(things you learned how to do
skills).

I think that the biggest assignment that I enjoyed

working with over the course of the entire class was
the Harvard Business Review Simulation. This
activity gave me the tools that I needed to be a
successful team leader but did not give much
direction on how to be successful. This was very
interesting to me because I have not done anything
like this before and I love puzzles and games. I was
able to take the assessment as many times as I
needed to get a passing grade, which was very
hard, so I worked to tweak my strategies over and
over to find out what worked the best. This
assignment offered me different lessons like being
as efficient as possible with a team, keeping high
morals for everyone in the team, and also staying
on top of the scope of a project. I found that I got
better and better as the weeks went by and the
concepts really began to stick with me.

Why is it important to you?

What connections can you make between this
learning and other things you have learned (in
school and beyond)? What connections can
you make between what you learned and your
life roles and goals?

A connection that I can make between this

assignment and other things that I have learned
would be the attention to detail that I learned in
business course at SDSU. Quality is all about the
details and when you are looking to be successful
then it is something that needs to be a priority. In
this simulation if there was a week that went by
that you forgot to set a meeting with your team
then their enthusiasm for the project would go
down and so would the productivity.

What worked for you?

In terms of process, was there something about
the assignment structure that appealed to you?
How did this task / structure of this assignment
differ from other assignments? Was it similar to
other assignments / tasks that were meaningful
to me? What strategies, skills, procedures
proved effective in the completion of this
assignment / task? Do you see any patterns or
connections in this regard to your preferred
approach to learning such as following an
outline, keeping to deadlines, other learning or
study skills?

This assignment was not like any other assignment

that I have worked on before which is one of the
main reasons I enjoyed it so much. It was a fun and
interactive assignment that I felt I could beat if I
just worked hard enough so I would spend hours
taking notes and making adjustments to get the
best grade possible. The structure of the
assignment was internet based where I just logged
on and could work at my own pace, which I very
much enjoy. I found that the best strategy was
being able to take the assessment multiple times
and learn from my mistakes as I do on an everyday
basis. It was challenging and frustrating at certain
points but I believe that I learned a great deal from
it.

What can you transfer?

Where can you apply / use these skills and
knowledge? How can you apply what worked for
you (above) to other learning goals or initiatives
in your life? Can you connect or adapt this
knowledge / skill to other areas of your life?
What kinds of metaphorical connections can you
make? Can you connect something that was
interesting or important with respect to this
knowledge / skill to something that you are
struggling with?

I have already begun using the skills that I learned

from the assessment everyday. At work I am
constantly looking for better and more efficient
ways to upgrade the people that I work with and
the processes that are in place. Project
management in general has been one general item
that has changed the way that I look at completing
a project. I call for meetings regularly to make sure
that everyone is progressing like they should and it
also opens up the floor for anyone that has
questions. I got this idea from the assignment. I
found that keeping a high moral with all of the
employees in the assessment was difficult and I
struggle with that all the time at work. It is hard to
make people happy and be effective so this is an
aspect of the assignment that I continuously work
on.

What evidence do you have?

Do you have a plan for communicating your
learning to others? Are there any tangible
outcomes (and specific artifacts, in particular)
that serve as evidence of this knowledge / skill?

I am constantly teaching at work when I see an

opportunity to help someone grow. At this point in
my college career I have learned a lot of very useful
knowledge on being an effective leader and how to
manage projects well. Sometimes I need to
recognize that I am being a little bossy when I
continue to offer my teachings but I simply want the
ones around me to grow. I would want them teach
me if there was something that I was not familiar.

Assignment #1: Questions for Reflection

Prompt #1: Now that you have completed Assignment #1, what were the most important aspects of this
assignment? What moved you the most? Any surprises?
I think that the most important aspects of this assignment were writing out what we learned in each course
and how we planned to apply the skills that were learned to our lives. In these courses I learned that a post
analysis review is crucial to finding out what was done correctly and what was done incorrectly then using
that knowledge to be better the next time. This was exactly what I needed to do to differentiate each class
and what I remember learning in each. It gets a little tough to remember what each and every class taught
us and honestly I have been very busy with work and other classes that I have not really had the time to
go back and reflect on them. This assignment gave me that opportunity.
Prompt #2: What are your ideas in terms of how to best illustrate your growth and development over the
course of your education and experiences with the Organizational Leadership program? What are your
best ideas with respect to specific artifacts / evidence that you might present (within the context of an eportfolio) as your consider your growth and development in the Organizational Leadership Program?
My best ideas on how to best illustrate my growth and development over the past year would be how I
have continue to apply the lessons that I have been learning at my current job. My bosses at work who

continually see me making strides to be a better leader in many more ways than one from class to class
have confirmed the validation of growing. I have worked to make myself the best version that I possibly
can and it is truly a testament to the hard work that I and the professors have put into each and every
class.

The Organizational Leadership Pro-Seminar is six credit hours divided into two specific sections. In ProSeminar II, students draw on their personal background, individual differences, knowledge and skills to
assess career choices that maximize your strengths, values, and passions. Students will explore their own
balance between work and the other important elements in your life, and develop strategies for living a
meaningful and fulfilling life, at least through your work. Students will explore the notion of career
management and work/life integration from a number of different perspectives, and centered on your own
unique personal characteristics, life circumstances and goals. Students will explore some of the most
relevant career management literature / theory, taking into consideration the interdisciplinary nature of
this topic. Youll also connect with some of the ideas you became familiar with in your previous
Organizational Leadership core courses, conduct a qualitative, thematic self-analysis, develop short term
and long term career / life plans, and collect artifacts to help along lifes journey.
