Welcome to the Getting Online at Durham Guide! This booklet will walk
you through all the tricky steps of getting all your bits of tech up and
running at Durham.
The guide covers three main sections:

DUO
WIFI

INTRO

EMAIL

Firstly well show you how to get on the uni Wifi, which isnt quite like
getting on at home, but youll be sorted in no time.
Then get onto DUO - Durham University Online, the hub for all your
accademic work. Here youll find module info, coursework submission
and marks and much more.
Finally your new Durham email account. This is the main way of your
uni and college communicating important info with you so its great to
get this set up on your computer and phone - well show you it all.

Keep an eye out for the lightbulb, giving you

useful hints to make sure everything runs as
smoothly as possible.

C O D E S
There are lots of codes and usernames at Durham and it can be
extremely confusing to differentiate between them. This page is
somewhere to write them for safekeeping.
First of all you have your DUO login Username. This will be a random
string of letters and numbers, for example djp33.

DUO Username
You also have a Student PIN which is a number starting with 000. This is
used to collect exam results and other reasons. Keep it safe!

Student PIN 000

Finally is your Personal ID. Another important number that you may
need in the future so write it below. It will be simliar to 1108076482.

THESE CODES WILL BE SCATTERED THROUGH EMAILS YOU RECIEVE

FROM THE UNIVERSITY, SO HAVE A LOOK THROUGH YOUR INBOX!

S E T U P

The first step to getting your tech setup at Durham is to get on the WiFi.
Unfortunately the process has a few more steps than logging on to your
WiFi at home but dont fear, youll be up and running in no time.

DU STUDENT

Select the network DU Student from the list of networks available in the
WiFi settings on your computer, laptop or phone.
Enter your DUO username and password in the login window.

This WiFi network spans all university buildings and colleges so youll
have access to the internet all over Durham.
EDUROAM IS ANOTHER NETWORK YOU CAN USE IF DU STUDENT CRASHES.
LOGIN WITH YOUR DUO USERNAME@DURHAM.AC.UK AND PASSWORD.

There is one more step to complete before you can browse the web:
pass through quarantine.
All computers are put into quarantine when they log on to the network
at the beginning of every term.
This means you have to pass certain checks to make sure you have
antivirus software installed so you dont bring viruses to the system.

Open up your browser and navigate to any website - you will be

redirected to the quarantine page. Click on the Users who have a
permanent account link.

Enter your DUO username and password on the next page and press
Continue.

This following section is for Mac users. Skip ahead if youre on Windows.

A window will open containing the application Dissolvable Agent.

Double click and open the app.

Often youll get this error

message popping up which
prevents you running the
tests and getting online. If you
have this issue, follow the
next few steps.

Open System Preferences, navigate to Security & Privacy on the top row
then you can select Open Anyway to get past the error message above.
YOU MAY HAVE TO ADDITIONALLY CLICK ON THE PADLOCK AND
SELECT ANYWHERE FROM ALLOW APPS DOWNLOADED FROM.

The test will run, for up to a few minutes. If youre on a mac it is likely
that you wont have anti-virus software installed so your computer may
fail some of the tests.
We reccomend installing Sophos Anti-Virus. Its free and works great.
There is an option on the test page to go to their website and install.

Once you have passed all the tests youll be taken to the final page
where you have to wait for around a minute, then restart your browser.
Youre online!
IN THE BILL BRYSON LIBRARY THERE IS AN IT SUPPORT DESK IF YOU
ARE STILL HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING ONLINE.

This following section is for Windows users. Go back if you missed the Mac section.

Save and open the file that downloads, or click the Run option that is
available on certain browsers.

Click Register and the application will start running the set of tests.
The test will run, for up to a few minutes. As youre running Windows its
likely you have anti-virus software installed and you wont fail any tests.
If not, we reccomend installing Sophos Anti-Virus. Its free and works
great.

L O G I N

Now youre on the wifi you can login into DUO - Durham University
Online, the hub for your accademic life at uni. The majority of subjects
will go over the basics in the first few lectures but heres a head start.

Head to the website above to log in to DUO.

Type in your DUO Username and Password in the centre section. You
will recieve these by email from Durham to enroll.
My Courses is a list of all the
modules you are taking. Click
on the name for more info.

The Toolbar
gives you

To login to your Durham email online go to the web address below.

https://office365.dur.ac.uk
Every student has a username for DUO, logging into campus computers
and other online services, like email. It will be a random string of letters
and numbers, like you can see below.

Enter this into the Username field and then your DUO password below.
REMEMBER YOUR USERNAME AS YOU WILL OFTEN NEED IT.

Once you have logged in, click on the profile button in the top right
hand corner to view your new Durham email address.

Go to the Settings app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch then select
Mail, Calender, Contacts then Add Account.

Select Exchange from the list of types of account you can add. Now
enter your email address, your DUO password and give the account a
description, for example: Durham Email or Durham.
Fill out the Server and Username, as below. Leave Domain blank.

yourDUOusername@durham.ac.uk
Press the Next button and your details will be
verified. Now you can get email on your iPhone!
The Username field will already have your email written in it so
make sure to CHANGE it to yourDUOusername@durham.ac.uk.

ANDROID EMAIL
Go to the settings app on your android device and navigate to
Accounts, add account then Exchange.

Enter your Durham email address in the email field, press next. Then
enter your DUO password on the next screen and again, press next.
Fill out your details, including the Server and Username, as below.

Press the Next button and your details will

be verified. Now you can get Durham emails
on your phone!

The Username field will already have your email written in it so

make sure to CHANGE it to yourDUOusername@durham.ac.uk.

To setup your Durham email on your Mac, simply open Mail. If you have
other accounts already setup, open Mail Preferences from the menu bar
and press the plus icon in the accounts page.

Select Exchange from the list of account type, press next. Then enter
your Full Name, Durham email address and your DUO password.

Enter in your DUOusername@durham.ac.uk in the User Name field, your

DUO password and outlook.office365.com in the Server field.
Press Continue and your account is setup!
