TEFL EXERCISE 1
1. What is the definition of language teaching ?
2. What is the definition of teaching language?
3. What is the difference between language teaching and teaching language?
1. Language teaching in United States is based on the idea that the goal of
language acquisition is communicative competence: the ability to use the
language correctly and appropriately to accomplish communication goals.
The desired outcome of the language learning process is the ability to
communicate competently, not the ability to use the language exactly as
a native speaker does (Harmer, 2009: 49).
The teaching of English should be made more practical and languageoriented. English is to be taught as language of comprehension rather
than as literary language. The role of English within a nation's daily life is
influenced
by
geographical,
cultural
and
political
factors
(Petel,Jean,2008:2).
Language teaching can be called as teaching second language that makes students Achieve
the use of language for communicating, it is not make them to be a native speaker, because
they are still have their first language or native language that has learned from birth or within
the critical period.
2.

The main aims of teaching English are language development and

library development. It enables students to understand spoken English,
speak English, read English and write perfect (Petel,Jean,2008:13).
Teaching language can be called as teaching first language. And it is
about the way of how teachers deliver the knowledge of language to
