COMPRESSION TEST OF

CONCRETE CYLINDERS

Introductio
n

THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF

CONCRETE IS VERY IMPORTANT, AS
IT IS USED MORE OFTEN IN
COMPRESSION THAN IN ANY OTHER
WAY. IT IS RATHER DIFFICULT TO
GIVE AVERAGE VALUES OF THE
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF
CONCRETE, AS IT DEPENDENT ON
SO MANY FACTORS. THE AVAILABLE
AGGREGATES ARE SO VARIED, AND
THE METHODS OF MIXING AND
MANIPULATING SO DIFFERENT,
THAT TESTS MUST BE STUDIED
BEFORE ANY CONCLUSION CAN BE
DRAWN.

a. To determine the compressive

strength of the concrete.
b. to identify modes of failure in
the tested cylinder.
C. to observe the behavior of
concrete under compressive
loading.

APPARATUS

PROCEDURE

1. compression test are made as soon as practicable after removal

from moist storage. The specimen are tested in moist
condition.

2. wipe clean the bearing faces of the upper and lower bearing
blocks
and the test specimen

3. place the specimen on the lower bearing block.

4. carefully align the axis of the specimen with the center of thrust of
the
spherical seated upper block.

PROCEDURE

5.

6. apply at the loading rate 20-50 psi/s (time to

failure
for 3000 psi
concrete is 1-2 and for
600 psi
concrete is 2-5m)

7. apply the load (at the designated rate) until the

specimen fails.

bring the upper block to bear on the specimen.

Adjust the load to
obtain uniform
seating.

Analysis / conclusion

They are many types of different failure and also these failures
have different identification on how the sample breaks.

The compressive strength of the cylinder are smaller or less

than the design strength which is failed. It means it doesnt
meet the design strength .

The compression test of the cylinder concrete is very important

in determination of the capacity/strength of a material.
