Teacher Actions

Student Actions

Intro/Model (10 minutes) Introduction, purpose, explanations,

Have students practice regrouping

using items from the classroom. For
example: Crayons, pencils, books etc,

think-alouds, visual or worked models, small steps working toward

mastery, etc.:

Tell my students that today they are going to be

mathematician. I will explains them why we use
numbers. I will explain the numbers are symbols
tell us how many of something we have. For
examples:

We add together by making groups of

tens.

1. I have 3 book.
2. I have 24 students
3. I have 20 pencils.

Guided Practice (__15_ minutes) Include checks for

understanding/ misconceptions, questioning, and engagement
strategies and feedback:
Ask students what numbers they built with their crayons or objects.
This activity can be done with groups of 2 students.

Ask the students to make as many

tens as tey can.
Ask: how many tens do you have?
Ask: How many beans do you have
left?

Have children share how they separated things.

For example: 20 pencil from 25 and then
determine how many were left.
Monitor Checks for understanding/formative assessment:
Identify s tudents who are not understanding adding and subtracting
Help students to visualize objects and show them how to add and subtract

Adjust instruction/reteach/additional guided practice

(__10_ minutes) Support for students who are not mastering the
concept or skill and/or English language learners or students
needing intensification:
Explain in Spanish to those students who are English language
learnes and help them to visualize with objects such as beans,
crayon etc,

Independent Practice/Extension/Connections (10minutes) Practice, extend, and apply the skills/concepts

(inclusive of work that requires higher-level thinking skills):
Create a Bingo board that has two sides. Write 10s aon one side and 1s on the other side. Then for each number I call they
need to put down one beans, one of the tens values and one on the ones values. The firs student to cover their board with
beans will win a free homework pass.

Closure (5_ minutes) Explicitly connect ideas, concepts, and skills together, and clearly connect to the lesson objective(s):
After students have completed this activity. I will ask students to share out:

What did they learn about adding numbers?

What was the easiest way for them to see each number?
