Whatproblem(s)doesdoyoufaceinyourpositionasHeadofICT?
Theschoolrulesareseriouslyoutofdateandhavenotbeenupdatedintwoyears.Theyare
alsowritteninformallanguageandarenotverystudentfriendly.WhatImeanisthatstudents
donotreallyunderstandtherulesastheyarewrittenortheconsequencesiftheybreakthe
rules.

Doyouknowofanyexamplesofstudentsbreakingtherulesthathadserious
consequences?
Yes,recentlyagrade8studentbroughtamemorysticktoschoolwithasniffingprogramonit.
Hedownloadedthesoftwarefromtheinternetandwascuriousifitwouldcaptureother
studentsandteacherspasswordaccesstotheschoolserver.Fortunately,oneofthelibrarians
discoveredthestudenttryingtoinstalltheprogramononeofthecomputersinthelibrary.We
alsohaveaseriousproblemwithstudentscopyinginformationandphotosfromtheInternet
andnotcitingsources.Thesekindsofincidentshavemademeawarethatwehavetoreview
andupdateourschoolrules.

HowcouldanITsolutionsolvetheproblem?
Grade8isanimportantagewherestudentsdonotrealizethatthereareevilsontheinternet
ortheyaretryingouthackingsoftware.Iwouldliketocreateagrade8projectwhereallofthe
studentshavetocollaborativelyresearchdigitalcitizenshipandpresenttheirfindings.The
studentscouldthencreatenewschoolrulesinkidspeaksothatallofthestudentswould
understandthem.

Thegrade8studentscouldworkinteamstocollectandanalyzetheinformationthattheyfind
andcreatenewschoolrules.Thestudentscouldalsoworkinteamstocreatetheschoolrules
andrelatedPowerPointPresentationsthatwouldbeshownatstudentassemblies.

Doyouhaveanyideas?
Ihaveanideahowthiscouldbeorganized,butactuallydonothavetimetosetupthewebsite.It
isimportantthatthestudentscanposttheirinformationfromhomeandalsoinschool.Using
theschoolserveroremailwouldnotwork.Wehavetriedthisinthepast,sowehavetouse
anothersolutionthatallowscollaboration.MsMarleneDavis,oneofthehistoryteachers,has
usedWikispacesforacollaborativeprojectwithherstudents.Itseemedtoworkverywell.

Forthedigitalcitizenshipproduct,wecoulduseWikispacesorPBwikiforthegrade8students
tousefortheirresearchandtopresenttheirfindings.WecouldmaketheURLavailableto
otherstudentsandtheschoolcommunitysothattheycanfollowthedevelopment.

Eachteamcouldbegivenadigitalcitizenshiptopictoresearch.Asetofschoolrulescouldbe
writtenfromtheresults.AlloftheresearchcouldalsobesummarizedinonePowerPoint
presentationthatcouldbeshownatassembliesinbothMiddleSchoolandUpperSchool
explainingdigitalcitizenship..

ForthePrimarySchoolwecouldhaveamodifiedversionofthePowerPointPresentationand
modifythegraphicstoappealtoyoungerchildren.IntheyoungergradesinthePrimarySchool
theclassteachercouldshowthePowerPointpresentationanddiscusstheruleswiththe
children.Thepresentationcouldalsobeshowntotheolderchildreninoneoftheirassemblies.
AtthemomenttherewouldbeonlytwoversionsofthePowerPointtemplates.

Therulesandthevariousconsequenceswouldbewritteninlanguagesuitableforthetwoage
levels.ThesewouldbeincludedbothonthewikiandalsointhePowerPointpresentations.We
havetomakecertainthatonepersonfromeachofthedigitalcitizenshipteamsisworkingon
theoverallrulesandPowerPointpresentations.ItoldMsAkmedthatIwouldfigurethisout,but
Ineedthenamesofallofthestudentsingrade8.Sheagreedtogettheseforme.

MsAkmedseemshappywiththewikisolutionandhasgivenmetheOKtogoaheadwith
planningthewikiwebsite.ShealsowantsmetostayinclosecontactwithherasIplanand
makethesolution.MsAkmedseesabigadvantagetousingtheWikispacestocollectthe
information.Allofthestudentsfromthevariousteamscanseetheworkbeingpostedonthe
wikiasitishappening.Itisalsoavailabletotheentireschoolcommunityasitisbeing
developedandwhenitisfinished.
