    DeathsofWildebeestinMaraRiveranaturalphenomenon
    On28th September,2015AfricaGeographicwebsiterunastorywitha
    captionhundredsofwildebeestfounddeadinTanzania.Thewebsite
    posted a number of pictures taken along Mara river displaying dead
    wildebeest and went further stating that the authorities have been
    contactedandtheexactcauseofdeathhasyettobeconfirmed.Tanzania
    NationalParkswouldliketoclarifyonthestorywhichhasalsobeen
    quotedbyothersocialmediaasfollows:
    SerengetiWildebeestMigrationisanannualnaturalphenomenonwhich
    takesplace betweenSerengetiNationalParkinTanzaniaandMaasai
    MaraGameReserve inKenyawhereanumberofanimalsuptotwo
    millions animals mostly wildebeest and zebra move in a clockwise
    rotationalroutedeterminedbytheavailabilityofgrazingandwater.
    Duringthemigrationanumberofcatastrophesoccur,includingdisease,
    predationandaccidentswhichputthelivelihoodofmigratinganimalsat
    highrisk.

    DrowninginMaraRiverisoneoftheoccurrencesduringthemigrationin
    theSerengetiMaraecosystemanditisestimatedthatmorethan250,000
    wildebeest die during the journey. Other causes of deaths include
    stampedeandotherpredators.
    However,wildebeestdeathsduringmigrationarereplenishedwithmore
    than350,000birthsperyear.
    Inviewoftheabove,TanzaniaNationalParkswouldliketoinformthe
    publicthatthedeathsarepurelynaturalandnotmuchcouldbedoneto
    prevent.IntheNationalParksandotherprotectedareasnatureisalways
    lefttotakeitsowncourse.
