We Think While We Read

This past week we talked about two different THINKING
strategies. We discussed the importance of not only reading
the words in a text, but also paying attention to what we are
thinking about. Students were busy working in their work on
writing notebooks each day during daily 5, recording
observations and wonderings about their books.
We focused specifically on visualization
and making a mental picture of our book
while reading. This makes sense especially
with chapter books, but is also important
when reading picture books.
Finally, we worked on writing down a
response to the following leading
sentences:
This book reminds me of
I am wondering about
I am thinking about
By verbally sharing, writing, and drawing their thoughts,
students become more metacognitive and learn to develop
their comprehension skills. We will focus a lot on this in
second grade!

No Flying In The House

For read aloud weve been reading the book No Flying in the
House by Betty Brock. The story involves a little girl named Annabel who is being looked after by a dog (Gloria) who is 3 inches tall
and 3 inches wide. A golden cat with emerald eyes told her she
could be a fairy!!
Think this story sounds interesting? Ask your child to fill you in on
more of the details! Read aloud is a time for students to be engaged
with a book that may be more challenging for the typical second
grade student, but allows each child to be exposed to that rich book
language that comes with reading more extensive texts!!
Science
The driving questions in science last week were:
1. Whats happening under the soil when a seed is
growing?
2. Do all seeds germinate and grow at the same rate?
3. What are the differences between small and big
plants (like trees)?
My classroom looks like a greenhouse these days and
students are busy recording their data and observations
as their plants start to sprout. We are learning that good
scientists write and draw about their experiments to ensure that their data collection is accurate and descriptive.

Please remember to sign your childs homework folder!

Homework does count for a grade on the progress report,
so please make sure your child is completing their homework
and turning it in!
