A.The first two paragraphs explains about humans naturally taking the initiative to
advance for the better of welling and prosperity. He uses examples like the fall of
the Berlin Wall showing that change has some good. Then, he adds that there will
be things that happen that is out of our reach or doesnt go the way it should.
He describes the word Enhancement as a positive angle to improve the patients
wellbeing. When it comes to any medical advancement, its not always guaranteed
that you will have great result in the end. Sometimes, there will be negative
outcomes despite what it may be.
In paragraph five he admits that knowledge can be abused in any termsthats
including medical treatments and enhancements. One perfect example he uses as a
reference is when athletes overuse erythropoietin. He adds that even though they
do such things it doesnt exclude other qualitative uses like people who are
diagnosed with end stage renal disease.
Trachman continues to talk about the idea of a products existence in popularity. He
makes it clear on pg. 230 in paragraph one saying that even though advancement is
welcomed; it doesnt necessarily mean that they would be prosperous. He uses the
example of people rejecting immunizations. Even though they are a requirement
they are still fought against. We cant just jump to conclusions when it comes to
medicine because there is a chance that theyre not going to make a positive
impression to the population in some way or another.
In the end, he stretches the idea that we should encourage advancement in medical
field for the sake of a healthier future. How we to strive for something that is always
changing shows that we are only being human.
B. One fact that is quite broad in evidence is that genetic enhancements help with
good intentions. There are studies in the area of medicine called Pharmacological
gene therapy. Here they studying how to get rid of imperfect genes or increasing
the concentration of protein needed for certain disorders or diseases. A website that
could go more in depth is www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2902249
C. One opinion that stands out to me is in the last paragraph and states, We should
not fear progress in diagnostics or try medical manipulations. This is because
experience teaches us that they will never meet their goals and always leave us
striving for more. This is an opinion because it is not referencing or criticizing
something directly.
D. in paragraph two on page 229 there is a sentence that says, Similarly,
physicians rarely question why people want to get better as long as the follow
instructions and balance the risks benefits in their health care judgements. I
believe he is making a Projection bias because he is assuming that physicians
actually share the same values.
E. Propaganda is used in the first paragraph, It says, Einstein and his relativistic
quanta, Godel and his incompleteness theorem, AIDS and Ebola, and the attack on
the World Trade Center demonstrate that nothing ever goes quite exactly according
to plan and that humans will have plenty of work cut out for them. I believe this is

a name-calling because they are using irrelevant factors to make a point about his
view.
