I will administer the outsiders Pretest on 9/11 to the four
class periods. We will begin with an anticipation guide on 9/14, followed by small group reading circles of chapters 12. They will have a vocabulary sheet to fill in using context clues and a note taking sheet for each section. Chapter 3 will be assigned for homework 9/14. On 9/15, class periods are only 15 minutes long, we will read Chapters 4 and 5 together. On 9/16, students will discuss their note sheets and have a lesson on analyzing dialogue; I will be using the gradual release model.
Lesson Two: Determine Theme
Start date: September 17, 2015 End date: September 21,2015 Period 1, 2, 3, and 4
We will begin by reviewing in groups the note taking sheets
from chapters 4-6. The students will read in small groups chapters 7 and 8 during class, filling in their vocabulary sheets. I will monitor the circles and formatively assess the students progress. We will read chapter 9 as a class, continuing to fill in our note sheets and vocabulary. I will do a lesson on determining the theme of a story using examples from their history class. We will discuss The Outsiders theme and the development thus far in the story. I will provide them with background knowledge on the setting and time period during the 1960s to further their understanding.
Lesson Three: Analyzing Film vs.
Novel Start date: September 23, 2015 End date: September 25, 2015 Period 1, 2, 3, and 4
We will review the note sheets from chapters 7-9 as a class
and answer any questions students may have so far. They will have silent reading time to read chapters 10-12. The students will watch The Outsiders movie and compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the novel and the movie.
Lesson Four: Argumentative Debate
Start and End date: September 28, 2015 Period 1, 2, 3, and 4
The students will be split up into two groups. As a group,
they will use google docs to work together to create their argumentative statement with evidence to support their reasons from the text. They will provide an opposition statement. They will present their findings aloud during the debate and each contribute to their findings. They will assign roles amongst themselves including textual evidence finder, speakers, Google docs editors, note takers, etc. they can create jobs as they see fit.
Lesson Five: Review and Post Test
Start date: September 29, 2015 End date: September 30, 2015 Period 1, 2, 3, and 4
On the last day, we will play a unit review game through
filpquiz to prepare for the final exam the following day. They will take the final assessment on the unit on September 30,2015.
