PD 4 AVID and Cornell Notes Professional Development

Why did you choose this particular event?

I attended a professional development day on AVID and Cornell Notes

during my placement rounds at Victoria University Secondary College on
the 3rd of September 2015. I chose to attend this event as the college is
very big on their AVID program and incorporating AVID strategies into
every class, and I lacked the knowledge and training in AVID strategies
and wanted to expand my knowledge and understanding in this area. I
also chose to attend this event as the college encourages all students to
take cornell notes in every class, again an area in which I lacked
knowledge and wanted to expand my understanding and apply it within
my own classroom.

How does it support your growth as a teacher?

This event supported my growth as a teacher as it increased my
knowledge and understanding of cornell note taking and the schools AVID
program and its strategies. Having attended this event, I am able to apply
AVID strategies such as cornell notes to my teaching and in my classroom
to increase student learning and performance and therefore, best prepare
students for study outside of high school. By utilising such a strategy in
my classroom, students are developing an excellent studying system for
organising and reviewing subject material thus, increasing their
comprehension and critical thinking of subject material and therefore
improving student learning outcomes.
What elements of the AITSL standards did it address and how?

The AITSL standards 6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve

practice and standard 6.4 Apply professional learning and improve student
learning were addressed in this PD event AVID and Cornell notes as it was
a professional learning day for all teachers and students teachers at
Victoria University Secondary College. This event also contributed to
improved practice and student learning, as it increased my approach to
student learning by giving me a new and alternative learning strategy that
can be applied to my classroom and across all subjects. This approach not

only increases student engagement but also caters for differentiating

learning and studying styles, whilst improving overall student learning
outcomes.
