Objective 1

A. XX will produce the phoneme /s/ with 80% accuracy across 3 sessions in the initial
position at the word level.
B.
The treatment strategy that we will use to target this is elimination of phonological
processes. Since XX is currently lateralizing his /s/ phoneme in the final position and
substituting in all other positions, we are going to work on correct production of this sound.
C. Stimulus cards, each with a picture representation and the printed target word, will be
used for this activity. There will a total of 10 stimulus words. Each card will have a
magnet attached to the back, in order to be utilized in the planned activity. These items
were chosen because they provide an opportunity to use the words in a drill like manner.
At 6 years old, XX should be familiar with these words. We targeted words with sounds
that were already found in XXs phonetic inventory so that the only new phoneme is the
/s/ target. The sound in the initial position was chosen because XX currently has the
voiced cognate in the medial and final. Since voiceless sounds are more marked in the
initial position, we would expect to see more generalizations.

Word list:

Initial:

sit

sick

seat

soap

sock

sand

sun

safe

sad

seed

Before targeting this sound, we need to make XX stimulable for the sound /s/ using stimulability
treatment cards and associated hand motions approach as outlined by Miccio. After he has
reached stimulability, a fishing game will be used where XX will fish for stimulus cards that are
placed behind a cardboard cutout depicting ocean scenery. XX will be given a pole with a
magnet on the end. He will then fish out one card at a time. After each card is pulled out he will
say the word 10 times. XX will be prompted to say the word. If said correctly, the clinician will
respond by saying, I liked that /s/ sound, or Good job. If it was incorrectly produced, the
clinician will respond by saying, Almost, try _____ again (clinician inserts target word while
stressing the /s/ portion of the word). If incorrectly produced again, a phonetic placement cue
will be given. A + will be used when XX correctly produces the phoneme, and a - will be used for
all incorrect productions.
*During this objective we will also work on making XX stimulable using the Stimulability
Treatment Hand Motions approach for the phoneme // in order to work on Objective 2
D. By targeting the phoneme /s/ in the initial position, we would expect to see
generalizations into the medial and final positions. We would also expect to see the
voiced phoneme /z/ to become more solidified in the initial position.
*Objective 2 should not be targeted until Objective 1 has been met
Objective 2
A. XX will contrast the /s/ and // phonemes with 80% accuracy across 3 sessions in the initial
position at the word level.

B. The minimal pairs approach will be used because the clinicians want XX to contrast the
phonemes /s/ and //.These phonemes only differ by place of articulation which makes
this therapy the minimal oppositions approach.
C.
Stimulus Items: Stimulus cards will have a picture representation of the target word and
the printed word. The stimulus words were chosen because they are words that would be
recognizable for XXs age. All words were chosen so that the other phonemes in the word
already appear in XXs phonemic inventory, so that the only new sounds are the contrastive /s/
and //.
Word list:
sink/think
sank/thank
sigh/thigh
sum/thumb
sick/thick
sing/thing
D. For our treatment activity, we have chosen a bean bag toss game. The room will be set
up with a table against one wall and the game set up in the middle of the room. We will
have 6 buckets set up in the form of a pyramid. Each bucket will be worth a certain
number of points (1-5). XX will be given 2 bean bags to toss into the bucket. One turn
will consist of XX throwing each of his bean bags into the buckets. XXs total points
from the buckets the bean bags landed in will be used as the number of target
productions XX is required to do. After XX makes each bean bag, the clinician and client
will go to the table. XX will be asked to produce the word on the card. With each correct
production, the clinician will say Good job or Nice _____ sound at the beginning of that
word. For all incorrect productions, the clinician will say Not quite, try _____ again
(target word). Another response option is for the clinician to say, I didnt hear your ____
sound, try ____ again. If XX produces the word incorrectly again, a phonetic placement
cue will be given. Correctness will be scored based on XXs first production of the target
word. Once this part has concluded, XX will start the process again by throwing the bean
bags.
E.
Generalizations that clinicians would expect to see by targeting these phonemes would
include the addition of a liquid (either // or /l/), as well as, addition of fricatives or affricates that
XX is currently missing from his phonetic inventory. We would also expect to see a
generalization of each sound to the final position because fricatives are more marked in the
initial position.
