Assignment No. 4

1. Discuss the difference between resonant and non-resonant

transmission line.
A transmission line with no reflected power is called a flat or nonresonant line. A transmission line is non-resonant if it is of infinite length or
if it is terminated with a resistive load equal in ohmic value of to the
characteristic impedance of the transmission line. On a flat line, the voltage
and current are constant throughout its length, assuming no losses. When the
load is not equal to the characteristic impedance of the line, some of the
incident power is reflected back toward the source. If the source were
replaced with an open or a short and the line was lossless, energy present on
the line would reflect back and forth or oscillate between the source and load
ends similar to the way energy is transferred back and forth between the
capacitor and inductor in an LC tank circuit. This is called a resonant
transmission line. In resonant line, energy is alternatively transferred
between the magnetic and electric fields of the distributed in the inductance
and capacitance of the line.
2. What are the conditions for wave propagation on non-resonant
transmission line? Discuss each.

3. What are the conditions for wave propagation on resonant

transmission line? Discuss each.

4. Discuss the different transmission line matching.

5. Define the following:

a. Microstrip

b. Stripline

c. Time Domain Reflectometer
