~~~ -seoable vader the specification for each , ss 958 BN 9A Helical Continuously Welded Seam Corrugated Steel Pipe SCOPE L.A This method describes the proce- dure tobe used in determining the quality of the seam or helical, continuously welded seam, comugated steel pipe. The procedure to be used involves distorting 8 short length of welded seam by using 425 mm diameter, hemispherical punch and a 38 mm inside diameter contoured dic, The resulting distored weld area ‘vill hereafter be called the “cup.” 12 At the option of the Engineer, rin he event of a disagreement between the Engineer and Fabricator, the referee text deseribed in Section 4 will be performed. 2. APPARA’ 21 Die—A die having an inside ameter of 38 mum and machined to con form to the corrugation of the sample. (See Figure 1.) 22 Punch—A punch consisting of 1425 mm steel ball atached toa seetion of 19mm diameter steel rod. (‘See Figure |.) 23 Bending Test Device—Bending jig with roller bending edges, adjustable supports, and 13 mm diameter mandrel. (See Figure 2.) 24 Gage—Figure 3 shows a gage recommended for use in measuring vari- ‘ous dimensions in connection with the cup test, and also for checking acceptable width of the area burned by welding. It is used in the following manner: 24.1 The projections at the top of the gage are dimensioned horizontally in secordance with the widths of bumed area (three times thickness of metal) ac- indicated gage of metal 242 The 762 mm overall length dimension is used to check the position- ing of the test. Standard Specification for AASHTO DESIGNATION: T 241M.95 243 When the gage is positioned on the pipe so tha the botom legs stad- dle the convex side ofthe cup, the 10.31 ‘mm projection should always touch the up. The interval corresponds tothe min- imum allowable depth of the cup after relaxation, 244. The 635 mm side projection can be used to check conformance t0 the limits set for in Seeton 33. 25 Loading Device—The loading de- vice may be either a hydrale ora scew~ type testing machine with sufficient open- ing between the upper bearing srface and the lower bearing surface ofthe machine to permit the introduction ofthe specimen to be tested, or any suitable device which is capable of applying sutfiient load 10 cause the di to penetrate te weld tothe depth specified. 3. CUP TEST PROCEDURE, 3.1 Position the punch on one side and centered over the welded seam at the desired testing location. The direction of the cup shall be with the concavity of the corrugation. Tests shall be made not less than 75 mm from the end of the pipe and the minimum distance between {ests shall be 75 mm, 32 Center the punch opposite the die, on the other side of the pipe wall, and, using the loading device described in Section 2.5, force the punch into the ‘weld to a nominal depth under load of 5mm, The resulting cup after relaxation must be at least 3 mum in depth, 33 Foralength of apipe tobe accept- able, the sum of the lengths of cracks oF other defects on either side ofthe cup shall be not more than 6 mm, ‘SS. Ifthe first cup indicates a fail- ure, punch a second cup at another loca tion on the weld not less than 75 mm nor ‘more than 300 mm from the first cup and inthe direction of the center ofthe pipe. If this second cup test indicates a failure, the pipe shall be rejected, 34 Report—No formal test report is necessary for the cup test. This test will be part of the routine quality control and inspection procedure for acceptance of the pipe, 4, REFEREE TEST METHOD 4.1 The referee test consists of de- structive tests requiring two 600 by 600 ‘mm samples of pipe containing appro» mately 600 mm length of weld running through the center. No reformed corruga- tions will be allowed in the samples. 42. Fach sample shall be cut into test specimens of the number and type as shown in Table 1 43. Tensile Test Specimens—The tensile test specimens will be prepared in accordance with T 244, Figure No. 4. The grip of each specimen area will be flatened with care to prevent damage to the welds, The ultimate strength of the across-the-weld test specimens shall bbe equal to 90 percent of the ultimate strength of the lowest base metal test specimen, TABLE Te 3 Temi ow actons the weld 3 Tamil tes of te base metal above the weld 3 Tensile test ofthe ie metal below the weld Fave bends Root bends (Cup tes of the weld Cap ext of the base metal 801 802 METHODS OF SAMPLING AND TESTING Note - All dimensions are in millimeters unless cuherwise noted. — s7— SIZE VARIES ALOADING. The face bend spec- {men corrugations shall be latened be- fore testing. The test shall be performed by centering the weld on a 13 mm man- rel and bending the specimen 180 de- ‘grees. The root bead test shall be per- formed by forcing the corrugated speci- men toa fat position. Any visible eracks in the weld resulting from the bend tests will be cause for rejection. The data resulting from the bend tests shall be the peroent elongation of the gage length. 45.1 Bend Test Specimen—The bend specimens shall be 150 mm long and 25 mm wide cut across the welded seam. 46 Repor—The following elements are essential in reporting results of ref- 46.1.
