Member Report: Fiber U 2015

By Colleen Brooks
I attended Fiber U in Lebanon, MO, for only one day this year. I was teaching one class in
the afternoon and wanted time to shop and visit so I loaded up my class materials and a
friend and we headed out early in the morning. After getting registered we had several
hours to shop, chat, and eat lunch before it was time for class. I had a great time
wandering up and down the aisles looking at fiber and yarn, touching fiber and yarn,
talking about fiber and yarn what could be better for a fiber addict? I bought a few
things and then, while enjoying a yummy lunch, ran into an old friend and an about-to-bea friend. We managed to snag a half hour in the crafting area to chat before it was time
for me to run off to be ready for my class. I had fun, interesting students that reminded
me how much I love to teach and talk about knitting. I was teaching an Intermediate
technique class called Be the Boss of your own Knitting Its Just Sticks and String!
On the way home we ate dinner at Dowds famous for catfish and barbeque. It was a
long day but fun and rewarding I love fiber events! Now on to the preparation for
Fiber Daze!

Fiber Daze 2015 would like to announce our first ever Hats Matter collection.
Handmade Hats of all types will be displayed during our festival, then dispersed to
multiple charities throughout our region. We ask that all donations be handmade. (Our
WinterWarmies Collection Box will be set up again this year for any donations of
purchased items.) Stitch one or dozens, together we can fill our area with warmth!
There will be four categories to choose from.
NICU: Seriously, who hasnt oohed and aahed over some of those cute noggin-huggers?
Use any preemie size pattern you wish but please select fibers that can be washed and
sterilized by the hospital.
Chemo Caps: All of us have seen the smiles that a great new head covering can bring.
Extra stretchy patterns are nice, (remember, without hair to fill a cap, these often need
to be undersized!) and fluffy uber-soft yarns would be appreciated.
Homeless Shelters: Heres a chance to get creative! Any fibers accepted. Were told
that most often the homeless are handwashing their items anyway and we all know the
true warmth of pure wool! Have samples of handspun? This might be a way to turn
scraps into treasure! Remember, unfortunately this group includes men, women, and
children, so all shapes and sizes gladly accepted!
Childrens Advocates: Want to crochet a Minion hat but dont have the courage to
wear it? Heres yours chance. These will be delivered to various agencies like DFS offices, Police departments, and schools. Youd be amazed at how thankful social workers
are for simple items like these!

Happy stitching everyone! See you soon!

How To Make Crochet Jewelry Without Knowing How To Crochet
by Ginger McElwee

Six Strand Necklace PatternCrochet

18 yds of ribbon yarn
Size F, G, or H crochet hook
Make a slip knot about 14 inches from the end of the ribbon yarn.
Chain 60 stitches. Make knot close to last stitch, leaving 14 inches of yarn.
Repeat six times.
Knot all six strands together on both ends, again placing knots next to stitches.
Using a yarn needle, thread all the strands through a wooden or decorative bead
for a closure. Measure to make sure the necklace will fit your head, then knot all
strands together to secure the closure onto the necklace. Voila!
