School Assessment:

Copper Trails Overview:

What are at least two strengths and two weaknesses of your school?
-

One strength that I have seen my school has is it offers two fall sports. One is volleyball
and the other is soccer. However, I noticed that not all of the students try out and make
the team. Another strength is that the school is two stories high. There is an elevator but
the students and staff use the stairs to get around. This provides an extra exercise to both
staff and students.
One weakness that my school has is that sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are not given
enough time to eat and exercise at recess. Middle grades are only allowed 30 minutes for
lunch and most of the time is used to eat. Another weakness is that only some students are
getting physical exercise daily. Not all the students are getting the physical exercise they
should be and looking at the school assessment they get a 40% on curriculum (Assessing
Your School, 2015).

What are at least two ways to improve the policies in place at your school?
-

One-way to improve the policies are to have students do a few exercises for the
beginning of each class. This will help students wake up or get their bodies moving.
Having teachers implement this exercise will help both parties. The students will be ready
to learn and teachers will be able to teach them. This exercise can be less than 5 minutes
long, it doesnt have to take a long time. The way to implement this is to have every
teacher will attend a meeting that informs them of the many quick and easy exercises that
stimulate the brain. They will come up with at least 10 different exercises that they can
incorporate in their class. Then on a weekly basis, they will send in how they
incorporated a certain exercise in their class and how it went.
Another way to improve the policies is to have more after school activities available for
students, parents, and staff. This would promote a healthy community. The whole school
working out together and getting active. The first steps to take is to survey the school and
see what interest them the most. Once we find out what the school is interesting in then
we would implement at least three to four activities after school. The people who would
run these events are one teacher or staff from the school and volunteers who could teach
the ones that are interested. Once we have a staff, the time, and volunteers we would
implement these activities.

What are at least two ways that you can use this information, teachers, parents, students and the
community in promoting behaviors that are more healthful?
-

When informing parents, students, administrators, and teachers it would benefit using the
School Assessment Tool and showing how under each category as a school we do not
reach 100 percent. The assessment would help determine where to begin, do we begin
before, after school, during school, or at lunchtime. As a school, we would take it
systematically and adjust from there.

How can the information obtained be used to support your potential topic for the Signature
Assignment?
- This information obtained can be used to figure out where to begin in establishing a
healthier school. The assessment can help in determining what area is the most in need and
which area just needs a little more support.

and others who were Pacific Islander or more than one race students.

From experience, there are about 30 students in each core class 7th grade at Copper Trails
Elementary School.
It is a suburban area because there are neighborhoods and homes surrounding the school.
Arizona Report Card mentions that the community owns their house and are not renting.
