Day: M T W T F

Date: 04.09.15

Learning Area: Maths

Curriculum content description:
ACMEM065
ACMEM066
ACMEM067

Time: Year: 11
Topic: Ratios

(from ACARA)

ACMEM068
ACMEM069

Students prior knowledge and experience:

(Outline what the students already know about this topic)
Students have previously done this topic in semester one and therefore have a understanding of the
concept of ratios.

Learning purpose:
ACMEM065:
ACMEM066:
ACMEM067:
ACMEM068:
ACMEM069:

(May refer to the Elaborations of the curriculum content description here)

demonstrate an understanding of the elementary ideas and notation of ratio

understand the relationship between fractions and ratio
express a ratio in simplest form
find the ratio of two quantities
divide a quantity in a given ratio

Learning objectives:

Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson, students

will be able to:

(Explain how you will know that lesson objective

have been achieved / monitor student learning)

(What will students know and be able to do at the

completion of the lesson specific, concise and
attainable objectives)
On completion of the lesson students should
be able to simplify ratios and complete word
problems regarding numbers in different
units and being able to convert them and
then write in the simplest form.
Students should also be able to finding the
missing value to solve a ratio equation.
Students must also comprehend how to
divide a number into a ratio.

At the end of the lesson I will have 4 questions for

the student to attempt, if they answer them all
correctly then they get a reward. The four
questions will be based on the learning objectives
and it will then be clear to see if the student have
comprehended the topic.

Preparation and Resources:

(Detail what resources will be used and what other preparation of the learning environment will be
required)

Nelson Senior Maths (Essentials 11)

Work booklet
Scrap paper for examples
Pens, pencils, eraser

Catering for diversity

(detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource

adjustments)
As many of the students don't have the textbook, they have a booklet which contains the
questions that they need. For those students who need extra assistance I will have extra
examples to help them understand the concepts.
Due to time restrictions the students won't be able to complete all the questions in the
activities, therefore the students who finishes early will then be able to complete the extra
questions.

Learning Experiences:
1. Introduction: (How will I engage the learners?)
I will explain the structure of the lesson and how it will work. Explaining that we will
look at some examples then do a few questions from each exercise. Before the end of
the lesson each student will do four questions to test their knowledge of the learnt
concepts.

2. Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the students

achieve the learning objectives? What tasks and activities will the
students be involved in to help achieve the learning objectives?)
To being I will firstly go through examples from exercise 12.01 (writing and simplifying
paint ratios).
Exercise 12.01 covers simplifying ratios, writing ratios from word problems and
changing units so the ratios are the same.

2-3
Minute
s

Example (simplifying ratios)

8:4
16:32
Divide by 4
Divide by 8
2:1
2:4 Divide by 2
1:2

27:36
Divide by 9
3:4

Example(word problems and changing the units)

David added 10 ml of brown paint to 2L of white paint to make the paint for the
woodwork in his lounge room.
A) what is the ratio of brown to white paint? ANSWER 10ml:2L
B) Are the units the same? If not change them to be the same ANSWER 10:2000
C) Write your answer in the simplest form ANSWER 1:200

4-5
Minute
s

Students are then to do:

Exercise 12.01
Question 3: only four (first column)
Question 6: only four (first two columns)
After students have completed the questions we will review the answers.

Exercise 12.02 explores the concept of finding a missing

value.
Example(finding the missing value)

1-2
Minute

x:10=5:2
Have make the. 2 the same as the 10 to attempt to make the equation/ratio
balance.
Multiple the ratio by 5 to make the two into ten then the number that is a result of

5x5 is equal to (x)

Timing: Learning Experiences:

* for students who don't understand why you must times the whole ratio.
Explain that when simplifying the ratio we divide both numbers and therefore
when we are expanding we must do the same to keep the ratio equal.*

4-5
Minute
s

Students are then instructed to complete questions 2 (first two columns) and
question 4
After students have completed the questions we will then review the answers.
Exercise 12.03 discusses the topic of diving paint quantities in a ratio.
Example (dividing a whole number into a ratio)

1-2
Minute
s

4-5
minute
s

48 into the ratio 5:3

Step one is too find the total amount if parts, you do this by adding the two
ratio numbers (5 & 3) the result is then 8.
To find the amount of one part you divide the whole number by the amount of
parts.
Once you have discovered what one part is equal to you then times that
number (6) by each if the ratio part ( 5&3).
The answer results in.
30:18
Students are then to complete questions:
One: first two columns
Five
Once students have finished this then we will review the answers

1-2
Minute
s

Lesson Conclusion
Students then have to answers four questions to see if they have grasped the
concepts.

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)

Due to my mentor teacher having a meeting I only had a short amount of time to present my
lesson. Overall I was happy with how it went. The students behaved well and actually attempted
the task I gave them. As I was teaching a low year 11 math class the students needed a lot of one
to one assistance. I wish I had more time so I could have helped the students grasp the concept
better.
