Day: Thursday Date: 27/08/2015 Time: 11:00 Year: Six

Learning Area: Mathematics Topic: Mean, Median, Mode and

Line Graphs
Curriculum content description: Calculate mean, median, mode
and range for sets of data. Interpret these sets in context of data.

Students prior knowledge and experience: Students have

previously been introduced to graphs and the concepts of mean, median and
mode

Learning purpose: Understanding that summarising data by calculating

measures of centre and spread can help make sense of data

Learning objectives:

Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson,

students will be able to:

I will be able to gauge students

understandings of the concepts when they
can accurately distinguish between mean,
median and mode, can place data into a
table with the correct headings and place
that data into a line graph with correctly
labelled x and y axes.

Complete line graphs and distinguish

between and work out mean, median and
mode, plot points on a line graph with a line
of best fit as well as putting data into a
table.

Preparation and Resources:

-

A worksheet with definitions of mean, median and mode as well as information on

line graphs with examples and activities ranging from simple to complex.
- Equipment needed:
- rulers
- calculators
- maths scrapbook
- graph paper
- pencils
Students should have nothing else on their desks.

Catering for diversity:

A workbook has been created with definition, examples and activities which will be
distributed to the entire class then read together with the examples worked through
as a class to show those who struggle with reading and writing what is expected of
them and how it is to be laid out.
My partner and I will walk around the classroom as students work through the
activities in the booklet to monitor them and ensure that those who are struggling
with the concepts get the attention necessary.
The activities will range from simple to complex to cater for the different levels of
intellect in the classroom.

Timing:

45min

10 min

Learning Experiences:
1. Introduction:
Using clapping to get students
attention.
Asking questions of prior
knowledge to gauge the level the
class is at.
Go through the examples with
students to ensure each student is
shown how to set out their work
and what is expected of them.

2. Sequence of learning
experiences:
At the beginning I will check for
prior knowledge of the topic. This
will be followed by an outline of
the objectives for the lesson
(learning mean, median, mode
and creating data tables then
interpreting that data to plot into
a line graph).
The booklet will contain
definitions of the terms with an
information sheet on line graphs.
Students will work through the
booklet at their own pace
which will help test their
comprehension of the topic as
well as allowing us to assess
their ability and
understanding.
There will be three activities
each for mean, median and
mode followed by three

activities to plot data into a

table from which students will
create line graphs.
3. Lesson conclusion:
If there is time at the end of the
lesson, students will be asked to
put away their booklets and we
will have a quick quiz on
definitions of mean, median and
mode and what relevant
information should be
remembered in regards to line
graphs.
