Creative Task Ideas

Sequences
Take a short melody or phrase and
shift the notes up or down one note.
The distances (intervals) between
the notes are still the same but you
have developed the melody.

Repetition
You CAN repeat stuff it needs to be
memorable, so use structure to help
this i.e. ABA structure, repeat the
first section!
You could repeat with a slight change
towards the end.

Phrasing
Generally 2 or 4 bars in length
Try to start melodic phrases and
end melodic phrases on the tonic
note
Try question and answer phrases
i.e. 2 bars of question and 2 bars of
answer.

Changing key
Switch to a related key in the middle of the piece. The
most common way is to move to the relative minor.
Imagine we are in C major (no black notes/sharps/flats).
Count down two notes from C major to get A the
relative minor of C major is A minor. A minor uses all
the same notes as C major (because it is related!) but it
has a sharpened 7th (count up 7 notes from A) of G#.
Notes of C major = C D E F G A B C
Notes of A minor = A B C D E F G# A
