Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F Date: _2/9/15__________ Time:

_12:40pm____________ Year: _7______
Learning Area: _Mathematics______________ Topic:
_Transformations______________________________
Curriculum content description: (from ACARA)
Describe translations, reflections in an axis, and rotations of multiples of 90 on the Cartesian plane using
coordinates. Identify line and rotational symmetries.

Students prior knowledge and experience:

(Outline what the students already know about this topic)
Students have already been learning about transformations and have a lot of prior
knowledge. They are a very advanced class. They have been learning about transformations
for the last week and a half and have become very skilled at identifying and creating
translations, rotations, reflections and a combination of two or more of these. However, they
do have trouble with rotations.

Learning purpose:

(May refer to the Elaborations of the curriculum content

description here)
Describing patterns and investigating different ways to produce the same transformation such as using
two successive reflections to provide the same result as a translation.
Experimenting with, creating and re-creating patterns using combinations of reflections and rotations
using digital technologies.

Learning objectives:

Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson,

students will be able to:

(Explain how you will know that lesson

objective have been achieved / monitor
student learning)
I will know that the lesson objectives have
been achieved if the students are able to
correctly answer the questions on the
worksheet and on the PowerPoint with
minimum of 80% accuracy.

(What will students know and be able to do

at the completion of the lesson specific,
concise and attainable objectives)
On completion of this lesson, students will
be able to correctly identify and create
different types of transformations, such as
translations, rotations, reflections and a
combination of two or more of these.

Preparation and Resources:

(Detail what resources will be used and what other preparation of the learning environment
will be required)
Projector & my laptop with PowerPoint presentation
Worksheets of transformations.
White board and white board markers.

Catering for diversity

(detail any adjustments considerations for

educational/resource adjustments)
The more advanced students will have the opportunity to work on extra worksheets with
slightly harder transformations.

Learning Experiences:
1. Introduction: (How will I engage the learners?)
Interactive PowerPoint

2. Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the

students achieve the learning objectives? What tasks and activities will
the students be involved in to help achieve the learning objectives?)
Students will be working on worksheets with revision questions about different
transformations. The worksheet will include more rotations than translations and
reflections as this is what they have trouble with.
12 Exercises:
2 Translations
2 Reflections
4 Rotations
4 Multiple transformations

3. Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it
to the lesson objectives?)
Some students will be selected to complete the question they found the most
difficult on the white board and explain the answer, how they got the answer and
why the question was difficult to the class.

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)

The students were left in their assigned seats (assigned by the mentor teacher)
which made them quiet and focused. The students at the front were engaged with
the PowerPoint, however some students were busy working on the worksheet given
when I wanted them to be focused on the PowerPoint. When the students were all
working on the worksheet, they were all very busy and quiet.
