Topic Four: Lesson Planning

The importance of planning for teaching and learning cannot be overstated. Planning the
learning process means that the lesson outcomes can be achieved. Effective teachers
cite planning as the most important part of the work they do.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic you will:

Understand the importance of planning in teaching and learning.

Identify appropriate learning purposes/outcomes for a lesson plan.
Attempt a lesson plan following the structure provided.

Focus Questions

Why is it essential to plan your lesson?

What role does the identification of a clear teaching/learning objectives play in
determining the lesson planning process?
Why should your planned learning outcomes reflect your teaching/learning
objective?
Groundwater-Smith et al (2015) highlights seven principles of planning on pages
207-214. Consider the importance of each of these principles in the planning
process.

While there are a range of lesson planning formats the Lesson Planning notes from the
School of Education indicate the headings under which you must structure your lesson
plans while on Professional Experience. Examples of other lesson plans are in
Groundwater-Smith et al, p217-223.

Curriculum content description: (from ACARA)

Topic: Water

1. The nature of water scarcity and ways of overcoming it, including

studies drawn from Australia and West Asia and/or North Africa.
(ACHGK040)

Students prior knowledge and experience:

(Outline what the students already know about this topic)

Year 7 students have been working on the topic water in the world for
the past 5 weeks and during their learning process, they have developed
different prior knowledge on the nature of water scarcity and ways of
overpowering it.

Learning purpose:

(May refer to the Elaborations of the curriculum content

description here)

There are many leaning purposes of this lesson, they include:

1. To improve and expand students previous knowledge.
2. Teach them that the people of North Africa live differently than what we
do in Australia.
3. Hopefully pursue them to make a difference/donation towards water
crisis in North Africa.

Learning objectives:

Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson,

students will be able to:

(Explain how you will know that lesson

objective have been achieved / monitor
student learning)
I will know when the lesson objectives
have been achieved by observing all
students as they are helping each other
to complete this activity and also
answering my questions, making sure
that they leave the classroom with
some knowledge. During this progress,
I will be ticking off all the boxes from
my checklist, making sure that I
havent missed any important steps.

(What will students know and be able to do

at the completion of the lesson specific,
concise and attainable objectives)
On completion of this activity, students
will have many ideas on how the
government can help get fresh water
into North Africa, by answering
questions, reading an article and
completing a crossword puzzle. This
will definitely improve and expand on
their previous knowledge.

Preparation and Resources:

(Detail what resources will be used and what other preparation of the learning environment
will be required)

Resources: a reading article, a crossword puzzle, white board markers, checklist

and a pen & evaluation sheet to evaluate students.
Preparation: (important note, make sure to tick off checklist as going)
1. Have everything organised and prepared.
2. Ask teachers if they would be able to help, if needed.
3. Make sure to get all students attention, before I start.
4. Explain to students what they will be doing today reading an article and
completing a crossword.
5. Ask students if they have any ideas on how the government can bring fresh
water into North Africa and write their ideas on the board.
6. Give out first activity (Article) and ask them to read it so they have a better
understanding.
7. Ask students if they are unsure of anything before they start the crossword.
8. Give out crossword activity and tell them that it isnt under test conditions, they
are allowed to help each other and can have their article to help them.
9. At the end, go through the answers by asking them what the right answer is.
10. Ask students questions such as What did you learn today? Give me an
example making sure they actually did learn.
11. Just before they pack up, tell students that they can keep the article but I will
need to collect their crosswords
12. Ask students to pack up quietly and wait for the lunch bell to ring.
13. At lunch, start evaluating students.

Catering for diversity

(detail any adjustments considerations for

educational/resource adjustments)

1. If a student is struggling to complete the worksheet, some assistance will be

there to help them. I will get other teachers to walk around the tables, making sure
that everyone is on track, working well and understanding the activity.
2. If a student is misbehaving or not wanting to listen, they will either be sent to a
teacher or a teacher will be sent to them to have a quick word.

Learning Experiences:
1. Introduction:

(How will I engage the learners?)

1. Be extremely prepared due to only having 25-30 minutes to teach

my lesson, it is very important that I make sure I have all of my materials
ready so that I can start my lesson right after my partners lesson, just so I
still have their attention.
2. Use a consistent attention-getting cue if students do get
distracted or become silly and inappropriate, I will stop what I am doing
and quietly shhh them, until I have everyones attention before
continuing on with the lesson.
3. Keep it short even though year 7s are in high school, it is very
important to remember that they arent as intelligent as what you would
think. So instead of bombarding them with so much information, I will be
keeping things very short and limited and asking them questions in terms
of them understanding what I want them to do.
4. Give the unmotivated student a role if there is a student that is
misbehaving or does not want to participate in the activity, I will be
asking them questions and if needs be, get them to write a few things on
the bored, just so they are participating.
5. Encourage communication In order to reach students, I will need
to communicate with them and also have them communicate with each
other.
6. Establish a relationship and high expectations I will need to
show students that I expect them to succeed and that I will help them do
so, by ensuring that they understand what they learnt during the lesson.
7. Set objectives clearly explain what is expected for students, for
example, by the end of the lesson, you will be able to explain what
desalination is.

2. Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the

students achieve the learning objectives? What tasks and activities will
the students be involved in to help achieve the learning objectives?)

Students will be involved in an activity where they will be asked at the

beginning of the lesson, if they have any ideas of ways that the
government can bring fresh water into North Africa, they will then be
asked to read an article which I have re-worded in terms that they can
understand and a quick activity at the end that involves them to fill out a
cross word puzzle, which is related to the given article.
To ensure that all students are understanding different ways on how the
government can bring fresh water into North Africa, I will make sure that I

ask heaps of questions whether it is one-on-one or the whole class,

because I want students to learn and remember something from this
lesson.

3. Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it
to the lesson objectives?)

By looking back at my resources, I will have a pen and an evaluation

sheet with me at all times, while the students are doing they activities
amongst one another. This will help me to collect information on their
progress, how they are working ad ticking off the boxes on my checklist so
I know that I have completed every little step that are included in my
lesson plan. Towards the end of the lesson, I will go through the answers
with them, but asking them what the right answer is. As Im wrapping up
on my lesson, I will ask them questions such as what did you learn
today? and Can you give me an example of a way that the government
can help bring fresh water into North Africa? After questioning them,
when its time, I will ask them to pack their belongings but making sure
that they leave there work sheets on their desk so that I can record their
progress with my notes.

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)

Everything that was planned for this lesson plan worked. The students worked
really well and they behaved really well when I was teaching the lesson. The only
thing that I would change would be my tone of voice. I need to improve on my
teachers voice and try to speak louder and clearer.
