    Preeclampsia has an unknown etiology but is linked to inadequate placentation where the uterine spiral arteries are poorly invaded by cytotrophoblast cells, failing to replace the tunica media and resulting in incomplete pseudovascularization. This decreased placental perfusion and endothelial dysfunction leads to vasoconstriction and increases in blood pressure, along with proteinuria and edema from damage to the glomerular endothelium and failure of filtration capacity.
