WORD/VOCABULARY COUNT ACTIVITY: HOW MANY WORDS DO I KNOW?

PROCEDURES/SUGGESTIONS TO USE THE TEMPLATE:-

1) Using the template, run the test 5 times within a span of a week or two.
Turn this activity into a competition, game etc.
2) Suggestion: Allocate 5-10 minutes for weak students, 10-15 minutes
for average students, 15-20 minutes for excellent students.
The rationale: The better you are at the language, the higher your chances to
write more words with less think-time. Speaking from experience, when I
gave my kids too much think-time for activities that they dont have much
input on.....my children end up daydreaming. ;p
3) Children add on to the words written previously. So use the same paper as
you dont want them to repeat the same words. Just add more papers and
staple. Plus, easier to do the word count assessment.
4) Keep it simple. Look for easy ways to carry out test/evaluations. As long and
you get the information you need about your student/students, its enough.
Save your time. :)
5) You can modify this template/procedures to suit your environment and
situation. I look forward to opinions to make this better.
Cheers,

HOW MANY WORDS DO I KNOW?

FOR EXCELLENT/HIGHLY MOTIVATED STUDENTS:To make it easy and if your students dont need much guidance, leave this space
blank. Let them write the numbers and words they know.

FOR
AVERAGE / SOME WHAT MOTIVATED STUDENTS:1)
2)
Based
on your own observation, you can actually add numbers here to set a
3)
benchmark. You can decide how many words your children should know and set
a4)
target number to achieve.

HOWSTUDENTS:MANY WORDS DO I KNOW?
FOR WEAK/ DEMOTIVATED
Use less time to carry out this activity (I know some scholars would disagree) and
turn it into a game. Having rewards up for grabs or giving affirmations can really
help.
Help them by asking them questions:1) What do you see around you?
2) What things can be found in your classroom/bedroom...?
For my weak/demotivated students, I wouldnt use numbering. The rationale: I
wouldnt want them to feel that if they failed to achieve a certain number of
words = they are bad at English or a failure.
Refer to page 3 for empty template.
