Lesson Topic: Aboriginal culture, first Australians
Year Level: Grade 5/6

Date: 22nd October
Duration of Lesson: 50 minutes

-To explore Aboriginal culture and how their customs differ


-Learn about the First Fleet and British settlement
-Be introduced to the Stolen Generation and discuss how it has
affected Indigenous people.

The impact of a significant development or event on a
colony; for example, frontier conflict

This lesson works in providing an overview of the Aboriginal


culture and the concept of outsiders invading their land. The
lesson will highlight what students already know about the
topic, aiding future planning for the unit.

Experiences of Australian democracy and citizenship,
including the status and rights of Aboriginal people
and/or Torres Strait Islanders, migrants, women, and
children
The contribution of individuals and groups, including
Aboriginal people..

During the middle years students were introduced to the


Aboriginal culture and these ideas were further developed in
the senior years of primary school where they explored
colonisation in Australia and worked towards answering the
question, who were the first people to inhabit our land?

-Youtube clips- The First Australians, episode 1, parts 1 &2.


-Whiteboard for brainstorm
-Blank paper for KWL chart
-Student exercise books for taking notes during video
