There are two ways to be a hero.

You can be seen directly fighting against injustice

such as policemen or soldiers, or you can be those who are in the background, such as
teachers or in this case, journalists. Journalists have a unique position in which they hold the
power to shape the public’s opinion through articles and facts. They are the ones called to
relate the happenings of the world, the nation, the state, to the everyday people. They hold
the power to enlighten our minds with news or to keep us in the dark with lies.
With this noble calling in mind, all journalists have most likely entered their
profession with a naïve vigor and enthusiasm to pursue and report the evils of this world. But
many of these novices will become dismayed to discover the pressures from high-ranking
officials or the government with much power and influence to withhold from reporting
scandals or secrets about that ultimately hurt their image. Oftentimes, these once idealistic
journalists will settle for a less scandalous story for safety. Safety from attacks by
corporations. Safety from criticism and angry letters from disbelievers. But most of all, safety
from risk. Those who sacrifice truth for safety are indeed sacrificing their honor, their
profession for acceptance.
Contrary to those who err on the safe side are those who are not afraid to be bold.
Those are not afraid to create a ripple in the publics’ minds. Those journalists are the real
heroes. They use their ability to shape and inform the public by bringing to light the injustice
by large corporations, by politicians, by government officials without fear or restraint. Those
journalists seek our and hunt with a passion for crime and above all, dare to take a risk. These
journalists are the ones dubbed muckrakers.
Some may use that name with scorn or contempt, but I will surely deem it as a name
of honor because only true, bold journalists will dare to venture out into controversy and be
radical for the purpose of bringing truth and justice to the public.
