Hi my name is Renita Pitts I am working on a Double Masters at Holy Names
University. I will complete my first Master of Arts in Culture and Spirituality this summer. However, I will run out of funds before I complete my second Master of Education with Education Specialist Mild/Moderate Disabilities Credential. Let me explain I re-enter higher education in 1999 at the age of Thirty-seven. After a fail marriage, (years of drug abuse) drug free, and five children, three of my children were young adults and the other two were still in my care 14 and 15 year old sons. I began working on an Associate of Arts Degree at Laney College. Employed part time to support my family and taking classes part time. Once I started classes I was told by one of my instructor to get check for a learning disability. I inquired about testing for a disability. I was diagnosed with Dyslexia as I was reestablishing my life. I was given accommodations to assist me with my dyslexia, when my accommodations were in place. I began to excel in school, by the time I completed my education at Laney College, I received three Associate of Arts Degrees; African American Studies, General Curriculum, and Social Science. I was presented with The President Medallion, with scholarships and I was on the deans list for three years at Laney College. I was also the president of Laney College Student Government. I transferred to The University of California Berkeley where I received many more scholarships and completed two Bachelors of Arts degrees in African American Studies and Social Welfare. I took off a few years to work fulltime at Laney College, in the High Tech Center as the Smartxt Student Coordinator for student with learning disabilities for the past seven years. This was the epiphany when I realized that I would like to do this work for the rest of my life. This is how I want to give back to my community. By assisting people just like me. That needs special help, so they can become very successful. That is when I added my Master in Education Degree with Mild to Modern Special Education to my Spirituality and Cultures Degree. I created my owned business Pitts of Gold where I worked for years until I began to work for Life times in Oakland, The Women of Color Resource Center in Oakland CA, The National Radio Projects in Oakland CA and Laney College in Oakland CA. You can look me up on Facebook, Google me and look up my story it is a lot more to the story that you can see on the Headstrong DVD, it is also on YouTube. The problem is by the Spring of 2016 I will be out of funds and need936.00 x 9 unit = 8,424.00 to finish my last 9 unites at Holy Names University. Today my children are all adults, I have twenty-five grandchildren, I interact with my children and grandchildren on a daily and weekly basis. I attend church on Sunday with my children and grandchildren. I attend school and love life. Student in Need of Help
