Measuring an accelerator pedal position sensor Sensor information Type: ‘Two potentiometers oe Download measurement ower supply: From ECU, § Vand ground J Signal type: Amplitude varying Signallevel: 9.5 to40V, Disclaimer Workings of the accelerator pedal position sensor The position of the acceleration pedal is measured with an acceleration pedal positon sensor which is connected to the ECU. Most acceleration pedal positon sensors are equipped with bwo potentiomaters to Increase reliably. cach potentiometer has ie own power supply fram the ECU, ‘which means the number of connections can be up to 6. The potentiometer contains a carbon track connected tothe power supply at one end {and ground at the other. A slider mecnanially connected tothe accelerator pada sles over the carbon track picking up the sensor voltage If the sensor contains two potentiometers, the power supply is usually connected in reverse to the second potentiometer. When the acceleration pedal is moved, te signal voltage of one potentiometer increases while the other cecresses, The acceleration pedal postion sensor inthis measurement example also contains two potentiometers, but they are both connected the same may. AS 9 result, both signals are equal except fora diferent offset. Connecting the lab scope Correct functioning ofthe accelerator pecal position sensor can be checked by measuring the following signal voltages, see igure 1 “Channel Probe Voltage CRange Sensor cutout signal ‘ {Ground at battery “ Sensor oaput sort 2 > P round at battery " Positive sie of Sst potamiometar power maly > Pr_Neostve sie of ist potentiometer poner supiy°Y Postve side of 2d potentiometer power supply ‘ PP __Wesntive se of 2nd potentiometer power suply EcuU @® V+ =H sensor ~ +p The lab scope is connected to the accelerator pedal positon sensor via Measure lead TP-C18128 and Back Probe TP-2P8 and set to recorder mode, In recorder mode a streaming Measurement "Is performed, cortinuausly displaying the signals lve on screen. Because the measurec Slonals vary slowly, the Automctive scope ATSSOCAD is set to a slow measuring speed Measuring Fgure 3 shows waveforms of an accelerator pedal postion sensor withthe Key turned an and engine off. This signal can be downloaded and tise to correctly set up the lab scope or be reference signal.
