Course Description
Welcome to my class! The focus this school year will be
learning and developing your skills as critical thinkers,
readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The
development and mastery of these important literacy
skills is not only important to achieving success in the
Language Arts classroom, but it is a critical component
of achieving success in other content areas, building
strong relationships with others, and attaining a
flourishing career as an adult.
This ELA course will allow each student to achieve the
following goals:

Classroom Expectations
1. Get your binders and
supplies to your seat
when tardy bell rings
and be ready to begin.
2. Put proper heading on
all assignments. (Right topname/date Left top
course/block)

3. Do not use electronic


devices in class.
4. Maintain a clean and
orderly work area.
5. Complete all of your
work and turn it in on
time.
6. All school rules and
policies will be adhered
to in my classroom.

Become familiar with different genres


Critically analyze and respond through oral or
written expression to various forms of literature
and expository text
Expand your vocabulary
Work in groups to complete projects that will
enhance your
listening, speaking, writing, and
reading skills
Support answers with textual evidence
Learn and apply the various steps of the writing
process

You will be working to master the Texas Essential


Knowledge and Skills for English Language Arts and
Reading and to pass the STAAR Exam. We have much
to accomplish, so get yourself ready for a year full of
great success.

Student Expectations
Behavior: There will be absolutely no disrespecting or
bullying of any kind towards anyone in/out of the
classroom, such as name-calling, cursing, teasing, or
interrupting when someone is speaking.
Late Work: Absolutely no late work will be accepted. If
work is not turned in when asked, then an automatic
zero will be given.

Grades will never be
curved. Each student will
receive what he/she
earned.
Daily Assignments = 50%
(classwork, quizzes,
homework, class
participation, warm-ups,
journaling, interactive

circles, novel analysis)

Homework: Will be assigned at least three times a week


to assist with comprehension and students are
responsible for completing it. ****Parents please ask
your child if they have homework every day and
actively monitor them as they work.
Absences: Make-up work will be available when you are
absent, but it is up to you to ask for assignments. You
have three days to ask for work and complete it, if you
fail to do so then a zero will be given for all work missed.
Re-tests: Available upon request.
It is your
responsibility to come to me and set up a time to take it.
A limit of five days will be given to retest and failure to
do so will result in you keeping the failing grade.
Electronic Devices: Cell Phones, IPods, MP3 players,
electronic games/devices are not to be used during class
or school hours. Cell phones must be turned off at all
times. Should this become a problem after a verbal
warning, the device will be confiscated and turned in to
administration/office.
Independent Reading: All students will be expected to
engage in independent reading on a daily basis for at
least 30 minutes. Keep reading materials with you at all
times.

Website Information: This year I will be utilizing a


classroom website: acornejoclass.weebly.com. Please check it for announcements and
other information pertinent to class.
GT/Pre-AP: The GT/Pre-AP program consists of a more rigorous coursework. Students will
be required to complete outside reading in addition to what is done in the classroom.
Students will also be required to conduct research and complete projects while
incorporating the use of technology.
Student/Parent Conferences: It is my goal to be available to my students and their
parents/guardians. I am accessible during my planning period and would be happy to
meet or talk with anyone during this time. If you are not available during this time, feel
free to contact me to set up another time to meet. You can reach me by email, which I
check on a daily basis, or by calling the school.
