Visit to HaasTech 2014

I, along with my friend Deepak Kumar Singla, went to see the open house put up by Haas
at their factory outlet in IMT Manesar on Thursday, 11 December 2014. During this visit, I
learnt the following things.

Haas is an American CNC machine tools manufacturing company. At the open house they
had displayed 3 types of machine tools, namely, Vertical Machining Centres, CNC Turning
Centres and Universal Machining Centre (5- Axis Vertical Machining Centre). They all
were beautifully displayed.
Tool Changing: I noticed that all the machine tools had automatic tool changing
mechanisms with provisions for holding multiple tools (12, 20, 24, 40 tools). Tool changing
time (tool to tool) varied from 1 sec to 5 seconds.
Automatic coolant and chip collection system: All the machine tools had an optional
feature of automatic coolant and chip collection system.
Die and mould: There was a milling centre for making dies and moulds. It could achieve
surface finish of up to 1 micron. It had in process gauging system (using high speed
imaging) also.
Y- Axis motion in turning centre: I also saw Y - Axis motion (drilling) in a turning centre.

Cost: The cost of machine tools varied from Rs. 30 lacs to Rs. 1.5 crores.
Controller: Unlike many CNC Machine tools manufacturing companies, Haas uses its
own controller.

As we can see in the picture, the controller has all the keys on its panel itself and computer
system is not required along with the machines made by Haas.
Machine tool accessories
Several companies like Renishaw and Delcam displayed the essential Machine tool
accessories like gauging, software, tool and work piece holding systems, tools, etc.
Renishaw had showcased a hexapod type shop floor CNC gauging machine. It cant
measure the coordinates but it just compares the finished product with the standard
drawing. They even gave me a CD to watch their products in actual use.

In all, it was a great experience and I could learn the latest trends in Machine Tools.
