DOHAKOSA WITH NOTES AND TRANSLATIONS BY PRABODH CHANDRA BAGCHI, M.A., D.Lit., Lecturer, Caleutta University. PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA 1935 PREFACE Mabimahopadhyaya Haraprasad Sastri was the first to liscover and publish the Buddhist Dobis. But he failed to -ecognise its language as Apabhrathéa and as his manuscript (or copy?) of the text was very corrupt he was not able to give rritical edition of the text. He published two collections of Dohas : one of Saraba and the other of Krgnacaryapida. Tt was eft to Dr. Shahidullah to handle the texts more critically. In an admirable work, Les Chants Mystiques de Kanha et de Saraha, ye bas compared the Apabhrariga verses with their Tibetan anslation, settled their meaning and made a detailed study of ‘heir language. During my last stay in Nepal in 1929 I came upon an old nanuseript of the Dohikosa in the collection of the Exalted Rajagura Hemardja Sarmé and another fragmentary MS. of Dobakoga in the Darbar Library. ‘The former MS. belongs vo the 18th century and contains two collections, the Dohakosa nf Tillopada and that of Sarahapida. ‘The former is antirely new whereas the second is a very correct and more somplete copy of the Dohskosa of Saraha already known. ‘The fragmentary MS. of the Darbar Library is dated 221 N. 8. (1101 A. D.). It is therefore the oldest MS. of any Dohikoga hitherto known and contains fragments of two new Dohikogas of Saraba and a portion of the Dohitkoga of Saraha already Known. My edition therefore inoludes : @, The Dobskosa of Tillopida. ‘The Tibetan translation of its Apabbrathse portion is found in Bstan hgyar, Narthang edition, Vol. XLVI, pp. 185a-137a. PREFACE [ii] Two fragments of new Dohakosgas of Saraha. Gil) The Dobikosa of Saraha—MSS. A.—the text publislied by Sastri ; B—the MS. in the collection of the Rajaguru; C.—the MS. in the Darbar Library. CONTENTS ‘The work of Dr. Shahidullah along with bie collation of two editions of the Tibetan translations PAGE have also been utilised. I. Apabhrarhéa Texts (iv) The Dohakoga of Krena. (e) The Dobis of Saraha quoted in various texts printed or in MSS. (vi) Apabbrathga verses quoted in various texts printed iv, SURO. STANT ae . or in MSS. Vv, ATOMS STENT, “ ” have been obliged to bring out this work in an incomplete vi, SRCUTSESTE TT: oo form, for various reasons. But from the portion of my study which it has been possible to bring out it will be seen that I had the intention to make as much detailed study of the text as possible and to bring together all parallel texts available at this stage for elucidating the meaning. A new form of mysticism js contained in these texts and we cannot possibly interpret it without referring to other texts of the same school. The plan of my work is therefore different from that of Dr. Shabidullah and it is my intention to insist on those aspects which he has not treated. i. Dobbkoéa of Tillopida we 188 ‘This work was sent to the Press five years ago, My studies ii, ‘The Dohis of Sarahapida ... a 16 jn the meantime have helped me not only in improving the text but also in throwing new light on many of the obscure points, ‘These have been included in my complete work which has been, ‘undertaken for publication by the Calcutta Sanskrit Series and will come out in course of a year, BBRowar os 4. oe 52, 121 TIL.
