Weekly Learning Objectives

Dates to Remember
nd

Language Arts - In Reading, students made inferences while reading nonfictional text. To make inferences we use the title and subheading, use
diagrams and timelines, use illustrations and captions, and use context clues
and our background knowledge. We also determined the main idea of nonfictional text. To find the main idea of a text we try to figure out what is
the most important part of the text.
In Writing students published their personal narratives. Our next writing
piece will be a narrative written in the point of view of an animal your child
has selected. Students went to the library on Wednesday and check out
informational books on an animal they are interested in. The narrative will
include facts that are true to the animal selected.
Math - In Math, students took a math test on prime and composite numbers.
We began our unit on multi-digit multiplication. In the next couple weeks we
will be learning different strategies to multiply multi-digit numbers. We
started with the base ten strategy where we draw ten stick and ones. Next
week we will discuss how this strategy is not the most practical. A letter will
be emailed home with links to videos to watch on the different strategies we
will be using. Students will not learn the traditional algorithm to multiply
until fifth grade.

-Included in Friday folders is a handout for our Animal Habitat Project Diorama. Students will be creating an animal habitat in a shoe
box that includes a replica of the animal and other animals present in its environment. Habitats should have everything the animal
needs to survive (food, water, air, and shelter!) Dioramas will go along with the animal your child selected to write a personal narrative!
Dioramas are due Wednesday September 2nd.

SCHOOL INFORMATION
-Sycamore Creek is once again participating in the GoPlay fundraiser. If your family does not want to participate, please return the
coupon book back to school. The fundraiser will end Friday, August 21st. All coupon books or orders need to be returned to school
once your order is complete.
-Spend your evening at PRO Martial Arts while supporting your school through fundraising! Track 1s Family Night is Saturday, August
15th from 6-8pm.
-The Board of Education approved a policy and R&P (3225) that requires every student in the system to have a signed form (Consent
for Technology and Digital Resource Use) on file regarding technology use and access. This policy and R&P now require parental
permission for the use of technology and digital resource use. Parents will have the opportunity to choose between granting all
technology access and granting no technology access. If a parent chooses to deny access, their student will not be allowed to use any
form of technology (laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.) or access digital resources. Students who have had their individual technology
access denied are still able to participate in teacher or administrator led activities that contain Internet content. Students who have
their technology access denied are not protected from viewing Internet content in use by other students. All students must turn in
signed consent form.
