Mrs.

Furgiones 7th Grade Civics Syllabus 2015/2016

Our Course Objectives:

The ultimate goal of this class is to provide students with a wellrounded understanding of how the United States functions as a
country. Students will explore the rights and responsibilities of
American Citizens and the inner workings of our federal, state
and local governments, to better prepare them for entering a
21st Century United States of America.

Whats that mean to me?

The first thing that I need you to understand is that this class is

amazing! The second thing that I need you to understand is that

this class is really important! One day, the 7th grade class of
Website: www.MrsFurgione.weebly.com
2015/2016 will run this country, so you need to start learning
how the whole thing works. The knowledge and skills you
acquire in this class will help prepare you to be a working part of a 21st century United States of America. And,
because the content of the course is so vital, students will have to demonstrate mastery, by passing an End of
Course Exam (EOC) at the end of the year. Take a moment, read that bold part over again.
Okay, now remember the first thing I mentioned: this class is amazing. We will have fun in here - and that will help
you learn the content! We will laugh, debate, sing and create new ideas and bring them to life! (My dance moves
are phenomenal and I apologize ahead of time for the singing.) We will move around and go outside at time. We
will use technology as often as possible. We will have a great deal of fun, but its super important that when I need to
pause, redirect you and move on to something new, that we are able to move forward. I need you to show up on time,
and always be ready to follow the two policies below. Its going to be a great year!

Classroom Policies:
Students are expected to abide by two (very simple) policies:
RESPECT YOUR SCHOOL, YOUR PEERS, YOUR TEACHERS, AND YOURSELF!
COME TO SCHOOL PREPARED TO TRY YOUR BEST & BE WILLING TO LEARN!

Purpose
This is our class website that will be found through your eCampus course (This is a great
backbone for our class). Here students and parents will find our daily activities, study
resources, homework/make-up work you name it the resources you need, and it is there.
Remind (formerly Remind101) will be used as a way to send out reminders to students and
parents via text message. Its really simple to sign up, simply text @mrsfurg15 to
81010 to start receiving the reminder messages. Please Note: Standard text messaging
rates will apply, but dont worry, Mrs. Furgione wont send too many.
eCampus is powered by Canvas, a learning management system used by any colleges and
schools throughout the country. We will roll this out slowly as it is the first year the county
is leveraging it. From the website: Canvas is the 21st Century LMS. Adaptable. Reliable.
Customizable. Easy to use. Mobile. Time-saving. -More info to come.
Civics, Economics and Geography textbook and the accompanying My Reflections workbook
are our text-based resources. Students will be issued their own workbooks as well their
own web-based login. Log-in and code details to be provided in class.

This is going to be a great year! Once you finish reading the syllabus, please head to mrsfurgione.weebly.com or eCampus to
complete your syllabus acknowledgment form and Open House survey!

Grading
In this class you are not expected to be perfect, you are however expected to always try your best and put
forth an honest effort. Grades will be derived from a variation of tests, homework, group work, student
service learning hours/projects, quizzes, current event short essays, individual and class projects, along
with class assignments.
Absenteeism
It is the responsibility of each student to seek out missed assignments when a day of class is missed.
Assignments given prior to your absence are expected upon your returned. You are provided one
additional day for each day absent to complete missed work. I am available for you, all you need to do is
arrange with me a mutually convenient time to assure you are on track for success.
Late Work
I will accept work late for partial credit, the points taken off for each day late varies based on the
assignment. Unless otherwise stated, you will lose 10 points per day that the assignment is late. Do not
wait until the end of each quarter to complete assignments. As mentioned before, if you put forth an
honest effort, you should do just fine in this class. That means completing work on time and seeking me
out for help and guidance when you find an assignment difficult to complete or understand on your own.
Rules
We have covered class rules throughout our first days together. They include but are not limited to: Being
respectful, being prepared, being productive, talking when needed, listening when needed, and staying in
our seats until we are directed to move. Be prepared to follow these rules throughout the year. The
consequence will meet the offense.
Dear Students,
I am excited for the year ahead and look forward to teaching you all there is to know about Civics.
Together we will laugh, learn, and enjoy an active learning experience. Always keep in mind, respect
goes a long way in my classroom, when it is time for us to pause the excitement for a moment, you
should follow rules and assure youre ready to take the next direction, I will always steer you in the
right direction. Heres to an amazing year together!- Im thrilled to have you as a part of our class!
