1. List the various direct energy conversion devices and explain the principle. [16]
4. (a) Find Rb on February 15, for a surface inclined at an angle of 300 towards the
equator at 10 am for a location, latitude = 200 510 N .
(b) If 0.25 of the total solar radiaiton are diffused and 0.75 are beam radiaitons, es-
timate the value of R assuming that the diffuse component is uniforly incident
on the surface from sky and ground
(c) Calculate the values of R in accordance with the model of Liu and Jordon.

5. (a) What are the advantages and disadvantages of geo thermal energy over other
energy forms?
(b) Discuss the applications of geo thermal energy. [6+10]
6. (a) Define optical efficiency. How optical losses in focusing collectors are mini-
mized?
(b) Determine the intercept factor for a parabolic cylinder concentrator producing
an image in the focal plane with h = 60, if the reciever is symmetrical with
respect to the centre of the focus and the receiver has a width of 0.02 and 0.03
of the width of the concentrator? [8+8]
7. What are the applications of biogas? Can it be used as a fuel in IC engines? What
are the modifications required in the regular SI and CI engines to adapt biogas as
a fuel. Is it economical to use it for IC engines? [16]
8. (a) Explain with a neat sketch the energy extraction techniques from tidal waves.

(b) The efficiency of power plant working on OTEC system is very less. However,
the secondary advantages make it commercially attractive. Discuss. [8+8]
