Old Lesson Plan

(face-to-face)
Students are given the definition
of a function.
As a class, examine different
examples of functions and nonfunctions.

Students practice in groups.

o Given different examples
of graphs, students
identify function.
o Given different examples
of equations, students
identify function.
o Given different real life
situations, students
identify function.
Strong group
members can take
over discussion.
Class discussion
o Questions are posed by
the teacher. Random
students are called on to
answer questions.
Limited
involvement from
whole class.

Students ask questions about

concepts causing confusion.
Students do an exit slip before
starting homework.

New Lesson Plan

(online)
Students are given the definition of a function.
The teacher gives one example of a function and nonfunction in each of three situations (graphs, equations,
and real world examples)
Students find two more examples of each of the
situations and post these examples.

Students will evaluate the information presented by the

instructor and will do additional analysis of the topic by
finding additional examples on their own.
Students take three quizzes. Each quiz can be taken as
many times as they wish. The quizzes will be taken by
each individual student. Students will receive
immediate feedback on quiz.
There will be a quiz on each of the following:
o Graphs and functions.
o Equations and functions.
o Real life examples and functions.
Each student will practice and receive
individual feedback.
Students will further evaluate the information by
practicing their understanding.
Class discussion (students split into different groups
on discussion boards).
Each group is given a different topic.
Group members must each post different examples
from that topic.
o Graph, equation, and real life example of a
function in the specific topic.
o Graph, equation, and real life example of a
non-function in the specific topic.
Group members must then respond to at least two of
their classmates.
o Classmates need to compare and contrast their
examples with the group members.
All students involved in the discussion.
Students will synthesize their knowledge of the topic by
identifying new examples, as well as comparing and
contrasting with other students.
After each lesson, students must create a blog entry
answering the following questions:
o Explain in your own words a concept from the
lesson.
o What is a concept you do not feel 100%
confident with and why?
o Additional questions?
Students will evaluate the material and analyze what they
have learned. They will then synthesize what they have
learned by posting a blog reflection. This will allow
students and teacher to review what they have learned and
make any necessary changes.
