Paranoid Fiction
The Detective Genre in Latin America
Objectives.
The purpuse of this seminar is to analyze the "Paranoid Fiction" model in the
present narrative. The Detective Genre as a distinctive form of this type of
fiction will be our point of departure for a more general discussion on the
uses of genres and its social function. Well analyze a number of stories by
Borges, Onetti, Bioy Casares, Garca Mrquez, Vargas Llosa from this point of
view although in fact they were not strictly written as detective stories in spite
of which they may be studied within this framework. This research will be
based on a thorough reconstruction of positions and strategies adopted by
Borges in relation with the detective fiction. It is also our aim to put to date
the debate on Detective Genre as well as to investigate the problems of its
development and localization in Latin American.
Organization.
One three-hour seminar per week. During the first hour the professor will
pose the main items of the research. In the second part discussions
concerning the texts of the bibliography will take place as well as debate on
the general issues of the seminar. Classes and discussiones will be held in
Spanish. Bibliography and reading in England and Spanish.
Requirement.
There will be no exam. Students are expected to present a brief paper (7-10
pages) before November 3. A more extensive paper (12-15 pages) should be
presented during the reading period. The issues will be freely chosen from
2
the problems raises in the seminar. Paper may be written in English or
Spanish. Oral presentation in Spanish will be weekly required. The final
