Intoduction
A. Purpose
This report presents the analysis and design of the five story hospital building. It is designed to meet
both strength and serviceability requirements, when subjected both to loads.
The plan of the building is 150ft x 150ft, with 5 bays of 30ft column spacing in one dimension and 6 bays
of 25ft column spacing in other dimension as shown in the Figure-1. Typical story height is 12ft.

B. Scope
For structural engineering, the scope of this purpose is to design the structural elements such as Beams,
Columns etc., required for the hospital and sample construction drawings from the model.

2. Methodology
This report includes the following steps, which were performed using software-SAP 2000 and CSI
Column, to get the required design of structural elements:

a). Modeling:

A 3D Model of five storey Hospital building i.e. 150ft x 150ft plan (5 Bays with 30ft span
and 6 Bays with 25ft span each) with 12ft height was drawn. Selected units were, K,ft,F.
Then Materials were defined as;
Concrete Compressive strength= 4Ksi
Rebars yield Strength = 60Ksi
Proposed sections of structural Elements were;
Beam= 1.5ft x 1ft
Column= 1.5ft x 1.5ft
Slab Thickness = 0.625ft

b). Loading:

After Modeling, Loads were applied to the structure, as prescribed by ASCE 7-05;
Live loads for a Hospital are given as under;
1. Corridors above 1st floor = 80psf
2. Laboratories and Operation Theaters = 60psf
3. Wards and Patient rooms = 40psf
4. Wind Load Using ASCE 7-05
5. Earthquake Load Using UBC-97
6. Assumed superimposed dead load= 40psf

c). Analysis:
After applying loads, Analysis was run and the following results were obtained regarding Bending
moments, Shear forces and Axial forces.

1. Bending moment:

2. Shear Force:

3. Axial Forces:

d) Design Report:
1. Beam Design:
The required Top and Bottom Steel area (As in sq. inch) in beams can be shown as;

Figure-06: Beam Design in XY-Plan

2. Column Design:

Using CSI Column software the proposed cross section of column with required Reinforcements (Main
reinforcement= 8#5 bars) can be shown as;
