OBSTACLE DETECTION AND

GUIDING STICK FOR BLIND

We will either find a way, or make one. Hannibal

PROPOSED BY

AP/ ECE- SSMIET & Team

To assist visually challenged people

To make a low cost device
To achieve maintenance free design

Ultracane" has been available since 2011

a retail price of over $1,000 places it firmly out
of reach of many in developing countries.

Smart Cane

TM

by Professor Meenakshi

retailing at 3,000 Indian rupees (may have

extra features completed trail)

Smart walking stick with wheels that could help

impaired people in walking with less accident
The idea of obstacle detection bot is imported
into this design with little modifications
Usage of ultrasonic sensors along with a
controller will do better (up to 4m)
To reduce the power consumption Atmega 328
microcontroller is used (3.3V)

Ultrasonic sensors in three directions mounted on the

stick will constantly sense the obstacles and report to
C.
C will calculate the distance and will trigger an
alarm/voice module if the obstacle is closer.
Distance of the obstacle is calculated using the
velocity of ultrasonic waves and the time taken for the
sensors to sense
This logic is programmed using C++ and downloaded
onto the Atmega 328

The Atmega 328 microcontroller module is

cheaper and consumes less power
Ultrasonic sensors are widely available with
various specifications and cost
The design can be mounted on existing stick
by altering it with wheels

As it consumes less power there is no need to

change the batteries regularly
Rechargeable batteries will do better
Mobile phones and power hubs can also be
used (may be as a custom design)
