What is Space?
Objectives for Space Unit:
Day 1-3 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

Objective: Students will be able to identify information from a video

source contained in Thinglink related to planet characteristics and
respond to questions using a Google Form. Students will listen to
Postcards from Pluto through Buncee. Students will be able to
synthesize information collected on the Google Form into a postcard
narrative based on the Postcards from Pluto format.
NSTE Standard 3: Research and Information Fluency (b, c, d)
NSTE Standard 3: Technology Operations and Concepts (a, b, d)
New York State Common Core Standard: Speaking and Listening 2:2
New York State Common Core Standard: Writing: 2:2, 2:7, 2:8
New York State Common Core Standard: Speaking and Listening 2:5

Action:
This unit of study will begin with a motivator. A Voki will introduce the
unit, followed by a read aloud of Postcards From Pluto. Students will
use their IPads to access a teacher created ThingLink about the Solar
System. This ThingLink will contain written facts and video about each
planet. Students will have previous knowledge of ThingLink and be able
to navigate independently. Each group of students will be assigned a
planet to research. Students will be given roles in their research group.
One student will navigate the ThingLink, another student will navigate

Google Forms to complete the research questionnaire and the third

student will lead the group through the process. The activity will
culminate with an original writing piece based on the book Postcards
From Pluto. Each student will use their research to write a postcard
from their planet.

Day 4-6 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

Objective: Students will create a Voki to recite their postcard.

Students will embed their Voki into a class created website called

Weebly.
NSTE Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation (b, c)
NSTE Standard 2: Communication and Collaboration (a, b, d)
New York State Common Core Standard: Writing 2:6, 2:7

Action:
Students will create their own Voki. Students will either speak their
postcard narrative into a microphone for recording or they may type
the narrative for the Voki to recite. The teacher will assist students in
placing the Voki on a class website for presentation.

Day 7-9 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

Objective: Students will create a Prezi about a planet using research

conducted during previous objectives. The Prezi will identify the planet
and key characteristics about the planet such as size, distance from
the sun and topographical features. Additionally, the student will
compare their planet to planet Earth. Students will share their Prezi
through an oral presentation.
NSTE Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation (a, b, c)
NSTE Standard 2: Communication and Collaboration (a, b, d)
NSTE Standard 3: Research and Information Fluency (a, b)
NSTE Standard 6: Technology Operations and Concepts (a, b, d)
New York State Common Core Standard: Writing 2:6, 2:7, 2:8
New York State Common Core Standard: Speaking and Listening 2:2,
2:5

Action:
The teacher will share an exemplar of a Prezi about planet Earth with
the students. Students will have previous knowledge and experience
working with Prezi. After sharing the Earth Prezi, the teacher will
then present the template that the students will use for compiling
their planet information in their own Prezi. Information gathered in
the previous objectives will serve as the data to be placed in the Prezi.
Students will be encouraged to be creative and be ready to present
their Prezi orally to the class.
