Title: An excellent Art lesson for the first day of school called My Favorite Things
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to find out more about the students in your class. This is a great
activity for the first day of school. It will help you and your students get to know one another
better. It is also a great self-esteem booster.
Objective: Students will produce a self portrait of themselves using different materials.
Phase One:
TEKS 117.11 B2C
develop manipulative skills when drawing, painting, printmaking, and constructing artworks,
using a variety of materials.
Materials: Roll paper (the length of a students body), crayons/markers
Phases 2-4: Collect and Enumerate Data, Examine Data, Form Concepts by Classifying
Directions:
Trace every student in the class on a piece of the paper. Have the student decorate themselves.
(they can draw their facial features and design their clothes etc.)
Write on the sides of the body favorites: Favorite food, tv show, color, subject, toy, holiday (these
categories will vary on the age of your students)
Work with your students in filling out their favorites and then hang them up in a hallway or in the
classroom if you have room.
Phase Five: Generate and Test Hypotheses
Assessment:
Discuss each ones favorites with your class. Youll be surprised how much you all have in
common. Youll get to know a lot about your students.

Adaption:
This activity can be done on a weekly basis instead of all at once. You can have a featured
student of the week which may make it easier for teachers with a large class.
