INTRODUCE Impressionism and Edouard Manet. EXPLAIN Impressionism and Edouard Manets background. Impressionism is a style of painting that began in Paris, France in the mid-1800s. Unlike artists before them, the impressionists painted most of their paintings outdoors and liked to portray natural subjects like trees, fields, and oceans. Impressionists would often take their materials outdoors and paint what they saw. This is called painting en plein air. Manet was a realist painter for much of his career. Manet's artwork bridged between Realism and Impressionism and gave the Impressionists credibility. DEMONSTRATE IN STAGES 1. How to paint the background. 2. How to paint a self-portrait. 3. How to paint a hat. 4. How to glue found objects on the hat. 5. How to outline the self-portrait/hat with markers. CREATE BY: 1. On a 9X12 white paper, paint the background with watercolors. 2. Paint a self-portrait. 3. Paint a hat on the head of the self-portrait. 4. Glue found objects on the hat. WRAP UP Express with your neighbor how you demonstrated texture and variety in your Manet/Impressionism self-portrait/hat collage. Assessment: Did the student complete the project?
