LAKE FOREST SCHOOL DISTRICT 67

Deer Path Middle School

Digital Learning Guidelines

Overview
The 1:1 Device Program at Deer Path Middle School is designed to help students
succeed academically as well as to help prepare them for their future. It is crucial,
therefore, that students care for and use their 1:1 devices in accordance with these
guidelines.
During the school year, each student will have full use of a District-owned Chromebook
for purposes relating to his/her participation in the District 67 instructional program.
Students will be required to complete orientation on the care and use of the
Chromebooks when the device is issued. Student will review and sign off on the 1:1
Device Acceptance and Agreement Form. Parents have accepted these terms
during online registration. Signatures and online consent also indicate
understanding and acceptance of the District's Technology Acceptable Use
Agreement which governs the use of all District technology.
The device issued to each student will remain the property of Lake Forest School
District 67 until the completion of 8th grade. The device ownership is transferred to the
parent/guardian of the student upon graduation from Deer Path Middle School. As with
all materials issued to students by the District, the student is responsible for the
daily/ordinary care of the Chromebook.

1. Device Use at School and at Home

- Students are required to have their Chromebook at school every day with a fully
charged battery.
- Students are to follow established rules for handling their devices.
- Examples:
- Always carry the Chromebook in its assigned case
- Keep all objects, especially books, off of the Chromebook
- When carrying or picking up a Chromebook, do so with the lid closed
and within the carrying case.
- Stickers or other decorations are not permitted
- Students are expected to comply with the District 67 Acceptable Use Agreement
regarding technology use. (attached) This agreement covers student etiquette,
obscenities, network use, cyberbullying, and overall personal conduct as it
pertains to the District Character Traits. Students are subject to disciplinary
action for inappropriate use of the network, Chromebook, or other technology.
- Out of consideration for other learners, personal headphones are required.
- Students may not lend or trade their devices unless directed by a staff member.
- Illegal use or transfer of copyrighted materials is not allowed.
- Students may not alter or tamper with the operating system on their
Chromebook.
- To ensure proper functioning, Chromebooks should be restarted a least once per
week.

2. Devices Left at Home

Most teachers have a loaner Chromebook to be used by students in that classroom
when a device is forgotten at home. No other loaners are available.
Lost devices should be immediately reported to a teacher and the technology staff.

3. Personal Security
Each Chromebook is barcoded, labeled, and assigned a carrying case. All labeling
should remain on the device at all times. Devices should not be traded or loaned.
Students should never share usernames, passwords, or other login information with
anyone other than a parent/guardian.

4. General Care
See Chromebook Care Tips sheet attached to this packet.

5. Responsibility/Liability
- Chromebooks are the property of the District and are subject to inspection at any
time there is cause to believe the student violated these Guidelines or the Lake
Forest District 67 Acceptable Use Agreement.
- Chromebooks may not be used for illegal or inappropriate purposes. As
consistent with the Student Handbook, students are subject to disciplinary action
for inappropriate use of the District's network and/or any technology, including,
but not limited to their District issued Chromebook.
- If the Chromebook, carrying case, or charging unit are stolen, lost, mistreated, or
damaged beyond normal usage, the student/parent(s) is/are responsible for the
cost of the replacement or repair.
- Approximate costs:
- Chromebook: $300
- Carrying case: $40
- Charger: $25
- Cracked/damaged screen: $50
- Missing keys on keyboard: $30

6. Repairs and Equipment Issues

- Students should bring their Chromebook to the Help Desk at the first sign of
damage or suspected issue with the operation of the device.
- Maintenance and repair of all devices will be conducted solely by District 67
personnel or designee. Under no circumstances should students, parents, or a
third party entity attempt repairs on District-owned devices unless a third party
insurance policy has been purchased. (see # 7)
- In the event that a student's device must be left with the Technology Department
for repair, a "loaner" may be checked out to the student. The same rules,
procedures, and responsibility that apply to the Chromebooks also apply to the
loaner computer.
- If a Chromebook is lost or stolen, the student should immediately notify his/her
teacher. Families will be responsible for the cost of replacing a stolen or lost
device.

7. Third Party Insurance

To keep repair costs to a minimum, parents may wish to purchase a laptop insurance
policy. For more information on this option, please visit: http://lf67.weebly.com/.
Copies of the application form can be found in the Deer Path Middle School Offices.

8. Filtering
The District 67 school network is equipped with content filtering that complies with the
Children's Internet Protection Act. The purpose of the content filters is to prevent
access of inappropriate Internet sites. The Chromebooks are configured so they will
use the District 67 content filter whether at school or at home.
Adult supervision is the best filter. Use of any technology should be closely monitored
at home.

9. Device Storage
During the school day, students should be in direct possession of their Chromebook
or it should be stored in a locker or other area designated for Chromebook storage -such as the bins in the cafeteria. Devices left unsecured are in danger of being
stolen, lost, or damaged.
Unsupervised/unsecured devices will be gathered by staff and taken to the Haskins
Library or The Cube. Students should check with the librarians/library assistants if a
Chromebook goes missing.

10. Change in Student Status

If a student leaves District 67 during the school term, the Chromebook and case must
be returned to the school prior to the last day of attendance or purchased for the
remaining balance.
If there is damage to the device, a repair fee will be assessed.

Web Tools, Google Apps, Edmodo and PowerSchool

- Throughout the school year, students will use a variety of online tools for learning
and project creation. As an added measure of protection, many of these sites
require schools to obtain parent permission before use with students under the
age of 13. The online safety of our students is of the highest priority and we only
select online tools that are safe and age appropriate. Accounts are created by a
teacher or the technology department and do not include personal information
that is accessible to the general public. When possible, we purchase district or
school licenses for these tools so we always have access to student accounts.
- All students in grades second through eighth have Google Apps for Education
accounts. Google Apps for Education allows LAke Forest District 67 to provide a
closed online environment for students for the purpose of creating, collaborating,
and sharing assignments and projects with their teachers and classmates.
Students can ONLY share their work with their teachers or classmates -- only
those with a Lake Forest Google Apps for Education account. Parents can
access their child's Lake Forest Google Apps for Education account by logging in
with the child's username and password.
- Deer Path Middle School uses Edmodo as its online learning management
system. Students access their teachers' class webpages with their Edmodo
account. It is the gateway to all classroom information, homework, calendars,
links to units of study and more. Edmodo can also serve as the place where
students submit assignments. Parents have access to their children's Edmodo
account to view classroom activity, assignments, and events. Parents can also
create their own Edmodo account with links to their children's accounts and
receive email or text alerts with assignments and event information.
- PowerSchool is the District 67 student data information system. It is used to
organize demographic information, class schedules, attendance, and grades.
Students and parents have access to PowerSchool to view and keep track of
grades and attendance.

Chromebook Care Tips to Prevent Damage

- The hinge and screen mechanisms are delicate. Open the device from the top
middle of the screen, not from the side or near the hinge.
- Chromebooks should always be kept in the carrying case. The device should be
closed when moving from place to place. Do not walk around with the screen
open.
- Never place anything on a closed device, especially in a locker. Do not place
anything between the screen and the keyboard. This includes papers, pencils,
post-it notes...nothing! Doing so can crack, scratch, or damage the screen.
- Care should be exercised when plugging in and removing power cords and
headphones. Pull or push the charger into the port carefully and as straight as
possible. Sideways motion on the port can break it.

- A small "crack" can escalate into a costly repair. Bring all damage to the attention
of staff in the Technology Help Room in the Haskins Library or in The Cube. This
includes keys missing from the keyboard.

- Repairs should only be made by District employees*. This means small cracks or
chips should not be duct taped. *This excludes those who have purchased the
third party insurance option.

- Care should be taken not to drop the device. A dropped device may be damaged
beyond repair. Always keep the Chromebook in its carrying case and close the
laptop when moving from place to place, even within a classroom. Place the
device away from edges of tables and desks so another person does not bump
into it.

- When in doubt, ask. If you do not know how to do something or if the

Chromebook does not seem to be working properly, seek assistance from a
teacher or member of the technology staff.

- Devices are assigned to each student. They should not be shared or loaned to
another student. Many teachers have a spare Chromebook for a student to use
in his/her classroom.
- Chromebooks should be taken home each night and charged so it is ready for
use at school the next day. This practice also helps prevent lost or stolen
devices.
