LESSON: Fiction and Nonfiction pairings


INTEGRATED SUBJECTS: All core subjects
TEKS: English Language Arts
(4.12 C; 5.12 C) The student is expected to identify the purposes of different types of texts such as to inform,
influence, express, or entertain.
(4.12 D; 5.12 D) The student is expected to recognize the distinguishing features of genres, including
biography, historical fiction, informational texts, and poetry.
(4.12 B) The student is expected to select varied sources such as nonfiction, novels, textbooks,
newspapers, when reading for pleasure or information.

LIBRARIANS OBJECTIVES:
1. The student will be able to define fiction and nonfiction.
2. The student will be able to distinguish between a fiction and nonfiction passage on the same topic or
theme.
3. The student will select materials for recreational reading.

RESOURCES: Fiction and nonfiction books on similar topics (KIDS INVENTION BOOK/WESTLANDIA for
example)
ACTIVITIES:
1. In advance of class, the librarian will place a fiction and a nonfiction book on the same topic or theme on
each table. Students will gather at tables for lesson.
2. With the class input, the librarian will define the vocabulary terms fiction and nonfiction.
3. Librarian will read a passage from the KIDS INVENTION BOOK. Students will describe ways in which
the passage is nonfiction. Librarian will then read a passage from WESTLANDIA. Students will describe
ways in which the passage is fiction.
4. Students will examine the books on the table. With one student serving as a scribe, they will find 3-4
clues that help them determine if the book is fiction or nonfiction. Each team will share findings with the
class.
5. Students will then checkout books for recreational or informational reading.
ASSESSMENT: Student will be able to define fiction and nonfiction. In a group students will be able to
ascertain whether a book is fiction or nonfiction.

MODIFICATIONS: Librarian is available for individual assistance with understanding concepts and applying them
to items in the library collection.
