POLICY STATEMENT
RATIONALE
HSIE is one of the six Key Learning Areas of the Primary Curriculum in NSW.
The future well being of human society and its environment depends upon the quality of peoples
interactions with each other and with their cultural, social and physical environments as they strive to
met each others needs.
Human Society and Its Environment K-6 provides a knowledge base for students to gain
understandings about change and continuity, cultures, environments and social systems and
structures, (HSIE syllabus K-6 1998).
AIM
The aim of Human Society and Its Environment is to develop in students the values and attitudes,
skills, and knowledge and understandings that:
Enhance their sense of personal, community, national and global identity;
Enable them to participate effectively in maintaining and improving the quality of their society and
environment

Scope and sequence guidelines have been developed for each stage for alternate years.

ASSESSMENT
Assessing is the process of collecting, analysing and recording information about the student progress
towards achievement of the syllabus outcomes.
Assessment can be conducted by using Formative and /or Summative assessment, (refer to p.81 HSIE
Syllabus K-6 1998).
