Exercise 1: Know Your Blood Cells

1. Red blood cells are biconcave to increase the surface area for gas
exchange.
2. Red blood cells are formed from stem cells called hemocytoblast in a
process called erythropoiesis.
3. If a person has hypoxia, they have a bluish, cyanotic appearance. This
is a result from prolonged oxygen deficiency.
4. The spleen can recycle old red blood cells.
5. In order for your body to absorb dietary iron, you should also eat foods
containing vitamin C at the same meal.
6. Vitamin B12 and folic acid are necessary for DNA synthesis.
7. The role of eosinophils is to moderate allergic reactions and defend
against parasitic worm infestations.
8. Basophiles are white blood cells that release histamine.
9. Macrophages originate from monocytes. They phagocytose bacteria
and debris in the tissues.
10.
B cells, T cells, and NK cells are all types of this specific kind of
white blood cell: lymphocytes.
11.
White blood cells use cytoplasmic streaming to perform
phagocytosis.
12.
The most common/abundant white blood cells is the neutrophils.
Exercise 2: Anti-Aging Tips
1. The 3 main factors of the aging process that you can control are
resting of the heart, aging of the immune system, and avoiding stress.
2. Dr. Ozs exercise-related anti-aging tips include stamina training and
resistance training, which you should do at least 3 times a week.
3. Two types of foods that you should eat daily are fruits and vegetables.
You should avoid processed food and white foods.
Exercise 3: Asthma: What Brought on the Epidemic?
1. In eastern Oakland, CA, diesel pollution and lack of oxygen are two
main factors that have made asthma a major cause of emergency
room visits for children.
2. The main environmental trigger found in the home that brings on an
asthma attack is dust mites.
3. The hygiene hypothesis is that our westernized lifestyle is too hygienic.
It was first suggested in 1989.

4. Children who lived in small farm towns had lower rates of asthma,
compared to those living in cities. The more endotoxins in the bedding
of the children, the less likely they would be asthmatic.
5. The immune system is involved in causing asthma because immune
cells appear in the lungs and release chemicals.
6. Sunlight, dirt, and pets may be helpful in reducing the risk for
childhood asthma because it helps to increase vitamin D levels which
help with the airways.
